Opening of National D-Day Museum Honors WWII Vets in New Orleans
In New Orleans on the 56th anniversary of D‑Day the National D‑Day Museum opened with a flyover by 54 planes as eight Medal of Honor recipients and thousands of veterans gathered. Retired Sgt. Charles H. Porkes and Arnold Smith shared memories while Stephen Ambrose and Steven Spielberg attended. Defense Secretary William Cohen and other officials paid tribute as veterans recalled campaigns in New Guinea and the Philippines. About 10,000 World War II veterans attended four days of ceremonies amid confetti and somber remembrances.
