At Roanoke Civic Center the Virginia Republican convention nominated John Dalton unopposed for governor as Joe Canada won a surprising bid for lieutenant governor on 958 to 845 over Walter Craigie Jr. Marshall Coleman edged Wyatts Durrette for attorney general 905 to 896 after hours of counting.
Virginia voters face a June 14 primary between Andrew Miller and Henry Howell for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination with about 1 million spent so far. Both campaigns plan heavy TV and radio buys as they risk funds, while voters will also pick Democratic nominees for lieutenant governor and attorney general and vote on House of Delegates nominees in 11 districts.
The Virginia House remains 79 Democrats 17 Republicans and four independents as GOP nominees struggle to contest more than a small share. In gubernatorial polls Miller leads Howell on some counts but both race views are provisional amid undecided voters. Lt. Governor Dalton awaits November matchup after Roanoke convention nomination.
