May unemployment fell to 6.9 percent from 7.0 in April with employment rising about 400000. Inflation concerns persist for the Carter administration as price trends show mixed wholesale gains and food costs poised to rise.
The House approved a bill to establish a new Energy Department with a five year life unless renewed. The 310 to 20 vote mirrors Senate action, with a House-Senate conference to reconcile differences. A five member price commission would regulate gas and cross state electric wholesale rates under the House plan.
The United States and Cuba will swap diplomats within three months ending 16 years of hostility. Cuba will release 10 of 30 Americans held on drug charges and review the rest. the U.S. will base its diplomats in Havana under Swiss sponsorship and Cuba under Czech flag.
