Birds Christmas trees draw wide praise in contest
Enthusiasm ran high as the Garden Club sponsored Birds’ Christmas Trees to aid bird care in winter. Judges from the club evaluated displays citywide, Ramsey School earning top school prize for a resourceful tree. Whitethorn, East End, Preston and Fairview schools also showed notable works with cranberries, popcorn, suet and seed motifs. Individual garden entries won girls Betty Rice and boy Jay Morris Hettel monetary prizes. many visitors praised the effort and variety of creations.

The December meeting of Bilaine Wagner circle of Bland Street Methodist Society was held at Mrs. J. B. Wilburn's home with Mrs. J. W. Bailey as joint hostess. Mrs. Allen Long led the Bible study and members shared excerpts from Knoxville annual conference minutes. Eighteen members attended, the gathering ending with a Christmas party and gifts.

Calvary WMS Holds its Final Meeting
The last meeting of the Calvary Baptist Church Woman's Missionary Society for 1937 was at Rev. J. W. Farmer and Mrs. Farmer's home on Cherry street. The Blanda White circle led the program with carol and devotional segments. Officers for 1938 were named, programs assigned to Mrs Dameron, and two quilts destined for the Baptist orphanage at Salem, Va, were shown. Present were Rev. J. W. Farmer and Mrs. Farmer, several officers and members, and Miss Jimelle Farmer.

The Young People's department presented a morning worship program led by Miss Connie Bailey. Billy Tral played Silent Night on violin, readings and prayers followed, with Bailey delivering the scripture and a talk on Christmas hymns and The Nativity in Art. Joy to the World closed the service.

PTA gatherings are scheduled this afternoon at 2:30 to 2:46 with Christmas programs and tree events at First Baptist First Presbyterian East End and Memorial schools. Christmas shoppers flood Bluefield stores in busy rush
Bluefield merchants report a strong Christmas rush despite an ice storm slowing early week business. Shoppers from Bluefield and nearby areas crowded downtown stores, with out-of-town buyers also noted. Post office staff work around the clock to handle the holiday mail as good weather aided weekend shopping. Fred Christie says the town was full of out-of-town shoppers and predicts a better Christmas season than in years past.

Christmas Tree Group to Sponsor Dance at Sportarena
The Christmas tree committee will hold a charity dance at the Sportarena Wednesday night with all proceeds funding Christmas tree presents. Ralph Weinberg furnishes building, lights, and music.
