Welch News Review Jailings and Obituary Details
More than twenty persons were jailed in Welch county for various offenses this week. Reese Young of War faces grand jury action for felonious assault on Elizabeth Hayes and will serve 19 days plus a $10 fine for drunkenness. Ixate Simpson of Filbert and Charley Robert Patterson of Gary received four months and $100 fines for moonshine possession. Wiley Harris of Kimball jailed 90 days and fined $100. Leonard Cornett was jailed 80 days and fined $10 for a tinketmess charge. Harold Frost of Taeger jailed 30 days and fined $100 for possessing a still. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Sandy Ward are ongoing at the Church of God in War with burial at the Teat Memorial cemetery in Rod. Mrs. Sandy Ward, a native of Rush, Ky, came to the area about 20 years ago. Her husband, Frank Bandy, works for Little War Creek Coal at Mohawk. She leaves a son, John Thomas of Davy. four brothers Frank Vane, Harry Fane, William Poca Fane, Pleas Fane. two sisters Mrs. Cynthia McGinnia and Mrs. Hattie Howell.

Pond Creek and Pocahontas Coal Company employees donated over 400 dollars to the Salvation Army Christmas fund, boosting the total to about 1,700. Major John Courtois noted rapid contributions toward the 3,000 needed to supply Christmas baskets for more than 800 needy families in McDowell County, with Kiwanis members assisting in Christmas morning distribution.

Williams Speaks at Keystone-Kimball Club Christmas Program
Rev W C Williams pastor of the First Presbyterian Welch addressed over 1200 attendees at the Keystone-Kimball Batter Service club Monday night. His talk No Room At the Inn urged hearts to welcome the Christmas spirit as choirs, a Sunday school play, a large tree and candy boxes, roses, and cigars for attendees complemented the program. The crowd surpassed expectations and the meeting ranked among the club’s most successful events.

Mohawk Woman Maggie Sandy Dies After Illness
Maggie Sandy, 67, of Mohawk, died in Welch hospital Tuesday after a six month illness begun in July. She was admitted November 8 and later taken to the home of her brother Frank Fans in Warrior for lying in state until funeral arrangements are completed.

Colored child 16 injured by shot in Powhatan incident
Dora Lee Webb 11, daughter of Joe Webb of Powhatan, is in critical condition at Grace hospital Welch with a back bullet wound. Police say a Negro woman, Carl Mills, fired during an evening quarrel with her husband Robert Mills at Tenderfoot Dickerson’s home. Mills fined $20 for assaulting his wife. Russel Smith jailed for carrying a pistol. Mills’ wife released on bond pending the child’s outcome.

Last Rites Held For Deputy Grover Dempkey
Grover Dempkey 40 year old deputy sheriff of Davy and longtime McDowell County resident was laid to rest Tuesday at Twins Branch cemetery after funeral services at Davy Methodist church led by Rev. J. E. Foster and Rev. C. C. Batley. He died Sunday after hospitalization in Richmond leaving a widow four children two half sisters and a sister in law. A county bee dealers’ association planning meeting slated for January noted in Cabell County.

Mortgage service marks payoff of Mount Zion church debts
The Mount Zion Baptist church at Peck and Bedford streets will hold a mortgage service Sunday to celebrate finishing its debt payments. Special music and responsive readings will be led by the choir and congregation. Mrs. M. L. Hicks will read the church history, and Rev. Q. A. Connally will deliver a Thanksgiving sermon to honor the church and community. Funeral services for Mrs. A. B. Prunty, 65, will be held at Mt. Mariah Baptist church in Maybeury Thursday at 1:30 pm with several local ministers assisting. she leaves four children, including Ulysses H. Prunty, principal of Kimball High School.
