Christmas vacation at Randolph Macon Woman's College will begin December 18. Miss Mary Berkeley Hobson and Miss Betty Smith, both of Bluefield, are enrolled at Randolph Macon. Miss Mary Hanifan of Paducah Kentucky, a sophomore at Randolph Macon, will spend the holidays with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Mattox.
Miss Margie Shumate a Virginia missionary to China will speak at the W M S meeting of First Baptist church this afternoon at 2 30. She was appointed in June 1914 and has been at Sun Hing in the interior hills evangelizing among people with little gospel contact. Her work aims to witness many turning from idols to the Living God as she moves among crowded towns inviting faith.
The Rev. C. G. Gunn, pastor of ee ee ee, spoke before the Fairview Parent-Teacher Association Tuesday afternoon at the school. His talk centered on cooperation between school and home to support student success.
Westminster Presbyterian Unity stresses five co operation essentials for teachers and parents. The final meeting featured seventh grade pupils singing Christmas carols under Miss May Bailey. Mrs Ben H. Williams presided. A $5 contribution to the Community Christmas tree was approved. A building improvement committee was named. January plans set with Mrs. P. M. Stump heading the program. Ten children receive lunch and milk daily at the school. Christmas baskets for needy families are provided by a church group and a beneficent organization. Attendance honors went to Miss Virginia Batley’s room and Clyde Johnson’s room at Fairview Junior High.
Rev. T. E. Peters of First Baptist led a Bluefield Young People’s Council supper meeting on the practical side of religion. He argued character deficiencies cause more job losses than mental ones, noted Christian homes raise children to stay in church, and warned churches produce wealth and stability beyond civic groups. Attendees included Miss Gertrude Steele, Mrs. F Black, Miss Goldie Perry, and Dr. and Mrs. Peters. The January meeting is set for January 18 at 6 PM.
Miss Jewell Clair Nicholson and Mr George Charles McCoy were married Monday evening at the Juliette Tea room in Bluefield Virginia. The officiating minister was Rev T B Peters of the First Baptist church. McCoy, district manager for National Biscuit, has lived in Bluefield several months. the couple reside at Postlethwaite apartments Ramsey Street.
The Virginia Asher Business Woman's Bible council held its final holiday meeting at the Y quarters. Miss Irene Norris directed a play The Silver Swan, and Miss Ruth Lace delivered a devotional on What is Our Gift to the King. Members gathered gifts for baskets, includes money food and clothing, arranged with blue candles and poinsettias.
The church served an appetizing supper and Mrs. T. H. Clagett provided the dessert with ice cream for the council members. Favors were blue cellophane bags filled with mints. Weekly meetings of the council will resume Monday evening, January 3.
The public is invited to attend a ceremonial this evening at 7 30 marking the opening of the Y for the holiday season. The Globe Trotters and Canandaigual clubs lead the event with a Christmas party to follow. Mrs. Bob Estill spent the weekend in Welch visiting friends.
Daughters of the American Revolution John Chapman chapter held its December meeting Tuesday afternoon at 648 Albemarle Street. With regent absent, Mrs. Bernardi McClaugherty, presiding was Mrs. W C Easley. Mrs. Easley read a paper on Christmas Carols and Their Origin by Miss Elizabeth Shelton, ritual opened by Mrs. Hancock, refreshments served by hostesses.
