Reading and Social Club Meetings and Banquet Report

The Reading Club meets Wednesday at Mrs. Wilhoit’s home with a patriotic program. The Social Club will gather Wednesday at Mrs. Cushman’s. Juniors and seniors had a well attended banquet at the high school with Hartwig Mottier and Edwin East providing music. The Civic Club met at the library and agreed to send 5 to the French relief fund and observe Lafayette day on May 7. The Spencer federation district convention on May 23 will have club representation.

Greene County Officials Summoned to Indianapolis

Clerk E Kirby Ashcraft and Sheriff Jeptha Moss were summoned from Greene County to Indianapolis by telegram from Governor Goodrich on Monday morning to receive instructions for registering citizens aged twenty one to forty, in compliance.

Army Draft Plans Recommend Selective Conscription

With the Act passed by the House and Senate the immediate filling of the Army and Navy ranks is set. A selective conscription will use a board to determine fitness for service. The first called will be the most suitable age and then sifted by responsibilities and usefulness at home. If more men are needed, the next class will be drawn, continuing until the required number is reached.

Highland youth loses eye to measles complications

John McDaniel eighteen of Highland township lost his left eye after measles caused the eye to burst. He suffered four weeks of pain and his right eye is now affected by sympathy. His father Wesley McDaniel considers taking him to Indianapolis for treatment or possible operation.

German Farmer Killed by Guard at Vincennes Bridge

Henry Oexman a German farmer from near Decker was shot and killed Friday night by a guard on the Indiana end of the railroad bridge at Vincennes. He allegedly advanced toward the guard after four commands to halt and died after being shot. No incriminating items were found on his person and intoxication was suspected despite unsteady movement.

Sullivan County Farmer Killed by Train

Everett Bland, 28, a farmer, was killed near Vincennes yesterday after being ejected from a moving train. Local authorities investigated the incident and notified Bland’s family.

Methodist Sunday School Attendance and Contest

T D Blackmore of Taylortown Township sold ten wagon loads of wheat to the Odon Milling Company last week at 2.50 per bushel or 1805 dollars total. Transportation costs were paid by the milling company.

Conscription Board Chosen in Greene County

Governor Goodrich appointed E. Kirby Ashcraft Jep tha Moss and Clyde O Yoho to Greene county conscription board to select precinct representatives. The one day statewide registration aims to enlist all eligible citizens while penalties apply for nonregistration. The age limit and registration date remain undecided.

Plan for selective conscription gains unanimous support

At the temple of justice officers will serve without pay. A resolution adopted in Indianapolis yesterday backs the plan. Three hundred representatives were called. five sickness refusals. County boards will meet today to choose precinct reps and finalize organization. Details of the law remain to be worked out and ages to register announced later. All male citizens within the age must register. The system aims to select the best material, with farmers and workers with dependents likely to be stricken from service but not exempt from registration.

Tornado Strikes Sullivan County Causes Property Damage

Sullivan county was visited by a tornado yesterday damaging houses and barns and breaking plate glass in stores. Bert Parker was injured by falling timbers. The storm entered near Hyatt's ferry in the southwest, moved northwest across a five to six mile wide strip, following roughly the prior storm's path.
