Miss Anna Duke Belle of Newcastle visits Mrs J Harry Smith in Bloomfield. Numerous residents travel for business and social events. Lincoln's birthday is marked in schools. Jasonville witnesses a tax sale injunction delaying street improvement assessments with many properties left unsold.
Sunday visits and midweek calls thread through Clover Bottom and Bloomfield. Nearby families including the Lofflands Johnsons Bakers and Cranes shared evenings with relatives and friends across town.
Several local residents attended the funeral of Loren Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barnes, at Solsberry on Monday after family and church attendance in town.
Roy Zink seen on streets north of town Saturday evening. Next Saturday night and Sunday a Liberty meeting is planned. McHaley and Ison took a business trip to Bloomington last Saturday. It appears the United States may be drawn into war with Germany. Mr and Mrs Virgil Hudson visited Oliver Abrams last Sunday. John Brown of McVitle did business in Hendricksville last Saturday. Ralph Burks fell on the ice Tuesday night and broke his arm. The Coster String Band held a concert at Alfred Burks last Saturday. Mr and Mrs Guy Abram visited Wade Abram and wife Saturday night and Sunday. Frank Ham of Bradley Wisconsin reported extremely cold weather, forty four degrees below zero.
Social notes list numerous visits and calls among area families. Matt Slough received his new Ford Friday while Miss Julia Stantz stayed with Mrs. Curtis Smith. Others include Fern Powell visiting aunt Mrs. Jessie Price and Nelson Martin visiting Cal v Falk and wife.
Mary Ockerman spent Friday night with Ruth Bynum and Miss Sarah Coppin visited over Sunday. Sampson Terrel bought a fine team of horses last week. D. M. Bynum made a business trip to Newberry Friday. Angie and James Cravens visited Frater school Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Ockerman visited his parents Sunday. W. D. Bynum of Linton visited D. M. Bynum’s family Friday to Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Woodall of Coen visited John Jackson’s family Sunday. Rev. Merritt Owen preached an excellent sermon Sunday afternoon. Church again the first Sunday in March. Card party at Wm Carrell’s Saturday. Farmers institute at Bloomfield Friday and Saturday. Furnace choir sang Friday. Mrs. Earl Clark of Taylor township visited Wednesday. Grace Bynum and Norvell Ocker man attended Ministrel at Bloomfield Friday. Furnace debating society to debate Friday night February 9 on the question of whether the thinker has done more for the world than the doer.

The Bloomfield farmers institute held February 9 and 10 at the Court House drew attentive crowds. Friday’s songs and recitations pleased, while Saturday featured Prof. R. A. Ogg on Life’s Eddys and Mrs. Curry on the New Ideal of Womanhood. Premiums awarded covered corn, oats, wheat, potatoes, apples, and baked goods, with strong displays in farm produce and domestic science.
Mrs. Lucinda Skomp aged 55 years 9 months 23 days died Sunday morning February 4 at her son Roy Skomp home 344 miles east of Newberry after about three years of illness. Survived by son Roy and daughter Dessie Keller with five grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral at Bethany United Brethren Church near Newberry conducted by Rev. Perry Key.
The Argonaut Club met at the public library with Mrs. C E Gregg leading due to Miss Maud Cravens illness. Thos Van Buskirk spoke on Conditions in America Following the European War as husbands of club women add interest to programs. A Wednesday Social Club gathering is planned and Camp Fire Girls and Camp Choctaw held events. The domestic science class runs a public tea room to showcase work and fund equipment.
James W. Young of Owensville Indiana, a University of Indiana junior, won the William Jennings Bryan prize on Foundation Day January 19 for a public discussion on The Budget System of America. He cited pork barrel and spoils system abuses and proposed improvements, noting England as having the most successful budget system.
Fire broke out in the residence occupied by Robert Hudson and family early Sunday morning. Mr. Hudson was away from home and the children have the measles. The fire was extinguished but the building was badly damaged and unfit for occupancy. The family moved to new quarters. household goods were removed with little damage.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer drafts a government budget with experts and department heads, the House of Commons may reduce but not increase expenditures, and all items must be proven reasonable before approval. The system, the speaker says, promotes efficiency and merit with one chief executive responsible. A prize of interest on $250 is awarded annually for discussion of core government principles.
Shelby county selected Russell G. East of Worthington as county agent. East combines up to date farming theory with practical experience and has earned a statewide reputation as an expert in judging farm products at exhibits. He is sober upright and energetic, and the county notes the loss of a valued young man while welcoming Greene’s neighborly service to other counties.
James Whitaker, longtime leading businessman of Scotland, died early Friday and was buried there Sunday. He had suffered a Paralysis stroke months earlier and never fully recovered. He was the son of Mrs. David Gary and was well known to eastern Greene county residents.

Newberry high school defeated Coalmont high school 55 to 5 at Newberry last Saturday night. Newberry will host Washington high school at Newberry on Saturday night February 17.
Charley Laughlin has rented a small room in the new Phillips building and will move his electric shoe shop on Thursday. He says he will be better prepared than ever to do good work in the new location.
Birth notices record a boy born to Mr and Mrs Henry Rose in Washington township on February 11 and a girl born to Mr and Mrs Homer Booker in Taylor township on February 11.
Court items include insurance suits and an injunction. Petit jurors for February term are named, with townships listed for each. Grand jurors from Wright and Grant townships and others are named for service.
John E. Cooper 41 of Midland and Carrie Wantland 31 of Bloomfield received licenses. Benjamin H. Nickless 24 of Midland and Pearl Edith Markle 23 of Jasonville also licensed. Bight Avery-Ghilton 22 of Salsberry and Olive Yoho 21 of Salsberry filed licenses. Roscoe Brannon 22 of Bloomfield and Josephine Remley 21 of Greene County married by John M. Meredith. both couples listed in the same notice.
Within two weeks the Bloomfield recruiting office focused on setup and public notice. After passing the examination, applicants travel to Columbus at government expense. those rejected return home at government cost. Funeral services for George Taylor who died when a felled tree struck a wire fence and rebounded into him were held at the Presbyterian church in Bloomfield. The Rev. J. A. Spencer conducted the service. Interment followed at Grandview cemetery. An obituary will appear later.
