Local readers note visits from notable residents and visitors, with social events and gatherings shaping the week. People from nearby towns stop by, share plans, and discuss community happenings at various venues.
A stream of visitors from Marco Newark Lyons Washington township and Ridgeport called on Bloomfield business and social links. Local events include a flag raising in Linton with two bands a mammoth parade and student bought flag pole plans and a sixty to ninety foot pole donated by Charles Hamilton.
The Woman's Missionary Society of the Indiana Presbytery concluded a three day convention in Bloomfield on April 9 10 11 1917. Miss Mary Rankin of Vardy Tennessee spoke on missionary work among mountaineers and mission schools women and girls. Ella Gardner a veteran Japan missionary shared experiences contrasting Japan theology and heathenism noting mission work progress and tools like Hepburn dictionary and McNair hymnal. Mrs George Clifford Evansville described Northwest Board institutes and new methods to engage college bred women in mission work. The session featured devotional led by Mrs Shaley and a Hilda Humphreys solo with committee reports and adopted resolutions of thanks to Bloomfield hosts press and local workers.
Bloomfield hosts an Indiana Presbyterial Missionary Society meeting with thanks to Mrs. Shaley and others for a meaningful program. Officers elected include Julia B. Shaley as president and officers for home, foreign, and youth committees, with the convention set to meet in Washington in April 1918. An informal reception followed at Mrs. L. P. Marshall’s home. A purchaser stated bids between seven and ten thousand dollars.
The Civic Club meets Monday at the public library with good attendance urged. The Sec ond district convention is set for May 23 in Spencer. District chairwoman is Mrs. O M Williams of Mooresville with county chairs named for Owen Morgan Monroe Sullivan Knox Davies Greene and Linton.
A large tract described as probably the finest bunth of timber in Southern Indiana was sold to Dan Riddle by Breeden brothers this week. The timber lies on Greene and Monroe county line, partly in each county, and comprises two hundred white oak and twenty ...
Governor Goodrich proclaims April 22 through the week as PUBLIC HEALTH AND CLEAN UP WEEK in Indiana. He urges all officials, business leaders, farmers and citizens to organize local efforts and churches to emphasize health and cleanliness.
Public flag pole raising scheduled for three o clock Saturday April 14 at the courthouse square. Citizens urged to attend in a show of loyalty and patriotism, with a admonition to bring others who may be less fortunate.

Pastor Merritt Owen invites all to Bible school at 9:30 and morning worship at 10:30 with sermons on The Christian and his Comforter Memorial Windows and An Old Testament Hero. Evening services note no public service this Sabbath and C E meetings at 6:30 with choir music and a 7:30 sermon.
David A Wilson 72 veteran of the civil war was found dead in bed at his son Earl Wilsons home in Linton Tuesday morning from heart disease after months of illness. He leaves two sons Earl of Linton and Clarence of Dugger and a daughter Mrs Noble Williams of Toledo. The body was moved to Bloomfield for funeral services at the Methodist Church and burial in Grand View cemetery.
Gustave Bubenzer, a German farmer, is reported in critical condition from wounds inflicted by a tobacco knife wielded by Marion Sargent, a Martin county merchant. The dispute arose after Bubenzer insulted the United States and Sargent intervened, leading to the weapon being used.
Bloomfield has furnished five names for its roll of honor with more expected. Don Warnick and Harry Wade serve in the navy, Glen O'Donald in Coast Artillery. John Timmons Navy and Bryan Blaker Army depart Monday for service. More may follow in the next issue.
Governor Goodrich writes to Will Hays offering his son Pierre for a private role in a company Hays is forming. Pierre Goodrich is currently a Harvard University student and would join the venture.
Tom Dugger of Bloomfield has been selected as manager of the Bicknell baseball team, a strong Southern Indiana club that last year won the Southern Indiana and Southeastern Illinois championship. Dugger previously played for Evansville in the Central League.
The circuit court’s daily routine itemizes cases heard, motions ruled on, and judgments entered. Dockets show filing dates, parties, and schedules, with judges assigning agenda items and noting procedural actions for appellate review and final disposition.
Circuit Court business remains slim as no new cases filed and all guilty pleas disposed of. Week ending April 21 lists multiple cases including State v Bowersock Johnson v Johnson and several divorce and mortgage actions with varied outcomes and sale orders.
State v George and Thomas takis resulted in guilty pleas with fines of five to ten dollars and prison time suspended on good behavior. A separate case fined five dollars for allowing minors to play pool. The Bloomfield K of P lodge held a county meeting with 147 members, a banquet by the M E church Ladies Aid, and eight candidates initiated with second and third degrees. Grand keeper Robert Brown spoke on fraternalism and patriotism, welcomed by Walter Brown.
