Five Acre Corn Growing Contest Seeks Wider Indiana Spread

Indiana corn growers have staged the Five Acre Corn Growing Contest with 995 entrants over three years. About 23 earned gold medals for 100 bushels per acre, while average yields ran about 66 bu per acre, nearly double the state average. Cost studies show higher yields mean lower cost per bushel, and premiums offer silver and gold medals for 85 to 99 bu/A and 100+ bu/A on five or more acres.

Food shortage meeting forms county watchdogs in Bloomfield

A April 7 1917 meeting at Bloomfield courthouse called by Governor Goodrich aimed to mobilize food production. County Agent McIntosh chaired as John A Cravens became chairman and George Davidson secretary. A three member township committee was named to organize districts with appointed members from each township and plans to reconvene April 16 at 1 30 PM.

Wash House Case Convicts Indiana Mine Superintendent

William P. McQuade, superintendent of Indian Creek Coal near Bicknell, Indiana, convicted in Knox circuit court for failure to provide a wash-house. Fined 500 dollars plus about 150 in costs after a lengthy trial with 150 miners testifying. This follows a February 1916 conviction and Supreme Court upholds the verdict. Prosecution by Joseph W. Kimmel. The ruling bears major significance for Indiana miners.

Fires Destroy Home of Sam James in Linton

Early Friday a house owned by Sam James and occupied by Mrs. Noah George was burned with contents. no one was home as Mrs. George was visiting in Bloomington. Authorities suspect arson. Earlier, a chimney fire at Quincy J. Mitchell’s home caused no damage. Chester Barnes leaves Linton for Gary to join the National Guard.
