Indiana corn growers have staged the Five Acre Corn Growing Contest with 995 entrants over three years. About 23 earned gold medals for 100 bushels per acre, while average yields ran about 66 bu per acre, nearly double the state average. Cost studies show higher yields mean lower cost per bushel, and premiums offer silver and gold medals for 85 to 99 bu/A and 100+ bu/A on five or more acres.

William P. McQuade, superintendent of Indian Creek Coal near Bicknell, Indiana, convicted in Knox circuit court for failure to provide a wash-house.
