The SGCHS Board of Trustees votes unanimously Sept. 20 to hold a special bond election on Nov. 8 authorizing sale of 80 000 in bonds to purchase a school site. Amortized bonds at 7 percent over up to 20 years. Poll at the high school gym. 40 percent turnout needed with 60 percent approval if turnout 30–40 percent. Public meetings set Oct. 10 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the high school.
Registration for the 17th annual Punt Pass and Kick for ages 8 through 13 runs through September. Local event begins October 8 at 9 30 a m with no fee or equipment needed. Participants compete by age at local levels progressing to higher rounds nationwide.
Four llamas owned by Homer Gorder join four men on a Box Canyon to Cooke City hike. The pack animals carry 70 pounds each and draw crowds on McLeod Street. The group notes llamas as easy to care for exotic pets with prices from 750 to 2000 dollars for adult males.
City officials investigated sabotage of a municipal garbage truck after ball bearings jammed the engine. A replacement motor cost 2100 dollars, with a polygraph plan for employees discussed as police continue the probe. the fault was first noticed September 12 and the bearing evidence found September 20.
The Sweet Grass Booster Association met on September 22 to elect officers and plan a $20 dues driven fund drive. They aim to raise about $4,500 to upgrade Channel 13 to a 10 watt system, with a current balance of $3,500 and $2,000 reserved for FCC requirements. About 250 boosters are involved with 20 attendees present. Officers include President Anton Varder Voort Vice President Wayne Reed Secretary Harold Esp Treasurer Helmer Branne and directors Olaf Haaland Curtis McBride Maryin Orange Frank Cosgriff George Lamach Donald Moore.
The SGCHS choir earned a rare bid to an invitational festival in Kalispell on November 18 and 19. Instructor Jon Quam requested board approval for the trip noting it is the first Class B school invited to participate and the honor followed from the bid.
The Kalispell SGCHS choir wins board approval to fund its spring festival participation. Quam notes the ensemble will perform solo and as part of a mass choir, a unique opportunity for local students, with $200 already on hand from a previous Pop Concert.
National 4-H Week with the theme Freedom To Be marks October 28 next week. Over five million 4-H members nationwide will participate as area clubs display windows and pursue new goals through learning activities. Noting 37 percent live in cities, the program includes urban and suburban clubs and is supported by private donors promoting the motto To Make the Best Better.
Fire Chief Dennis Beer reports CPR instruction underway for Emergency Medical Technicians. Courses will soon be offered to groups and individuals with material supplied by the local Red Cross. Ten local men completed instructor training in Livingston and will begin teaching next week.
The Community Bazaar will be held Saturday November 12 from 9 AM to 4 PM at the Legion Hall. The Big Timber Jayceens sponsor and limit booths to 40 with a $5 charge. Booth buyers must arrange their own tables if late and call Betty Ames or Rose Fichtner for details.
