Askin Construction of Bozeman won the bid for the Natural Bridge and Falls interpretive site work 26 miles south of Big Timber. Work to start around Sept 29 and last about two months, weather permitting. Public advised to visit later winter or spring to avoid blasting and equipment. Montana Fish and Game received 74000 from the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation toward trails and improvements. total project cost estimated at 148190.
Sen John Melcher urged a one year delay on the Absaroka Beartooth wilderness bill to allow thorough study. He called for more boundary proposals input from the National Park Service and local hearings before a Senate vote.
The SGCHS Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting October 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the High School lunchroom to inform the public about a November 8 bond election seeking approval to issue 80 000 dollars in bonds for a school building site. A second meeting is planned by October 18 at the same time and place. All residents are urged to attend.
Tri County Planning Board led by John Morrison will survey socio economic conditions across Sweet Grass Stillwater and Carbon counties to assess potential mining impacts. The process includes presurvey releases a countywide questionnaire follow ups by mail and telephone outreach with a town meeting planned to share results.
Beartooth Face Planning Unit Land Management Plan Draft Environmental Statement completed and open for public review in Montana and Wyoming. The plan covers the Beartooth Mountains north and east face, including areas near Red Lodge and portions of Sweet Grass Stillwater Carbon and Park Counties and Park County Wyoming. Public meetings set for mid November with comments due by November 30 1977. Copies mailed to agencies groups companies and individuals with review sites listed in Billings Bozeman Cody Red Lodge Big Timber and Rang er District Offices Powell Wyoming.
The House fell 18 votes short of a two thirds margin under suspended rules for the Wilderness Study bill. An aide said the measure will go to the House Rules Committee for reconsideration after clearing the Senate, setting aside almost a million acres of nine national forest areas for wilderness study pending final disposal by Congress.
The Fall meeting of the T-Bone CowBelles in Big Timber features a Wilderness Update panel open to the public. District Ranger Roger Siemens will summarize Forest Service studies in the Beartooth area and explain the ongoing Beartooth Face Study. Attorney Conrad Fredricks will outline wilderness bills and progress. Rancher Norm Starr also participates.
The panel features Representative Ron Marlenee and Park County rancher Peg Allen to discuss wilderness bills and effective letter writing and testimony. A question session follows. The event, part of the T Bone Law, includes a luncheon and talks at the Lutheran Church with reservations via Mabel Harper or Drivdahl.
Sweet Grass County has received 137 122 under the Payments in Lieu of Taxes program. A check for the county share was mailed from Washington on Sept 30. The federal government provides the fund to offset tax revenue losses from federally owned lands. Montana counties total 8838854 per a Western District press release by Congressman Max Raucus.
