County crews for the 1964 census of agriculture were named by Crew Leader Tommy Saunders of Columbus. Area 1 covers north of the Yellowstone River and west of the Harlo ton Big Timber highway Everett Charlson. Area 2 north of the Yellowstone and east of the highway Barbara Osen. Area 3 all of Sweet Grass County south of the Yellowstone Raymond Forster. Enumerators will complete a four day home study, locate farms, verify questionnaires, and deliver data to the Census Bureau.
Lones Wiggen Jr., gold medalist in the small bore rifle event at Tokyo, is a well known figure in Big Timber shooting circles. He won the three position event with 1164 points, set a world record, and tied for silver in prone with 597. Wiggen, an Army lieutenant at Fort Benning, Ga., has a storied career including MSC captaincy in 1960 and Montana and national titles.
Mrs Hart 89 died Saturday at Community hospital after major surgery. Born Anna Beckwith Smith in Geneva New York she founded and was first dean of Margaret Morrison Carnegie College in Pittsburgh. She and husband Harry Hart led the Montana Dude Ranchers and survived by daughter in law Barbara and grandchildren Henry Dean Marjorie Ann Nancy Lee Hart. Funeral was held Tuesday at Congregational church with Rev Ben Knopp. burial Mountain View.
The Five Rivers chapter board held its regular bimonthly meeting at Secora's Country Kitchen in Ennis Monday evening. They appointed James O'Dore to fill an unexpired term and approved plans to update the volunteers office and fund campaign.
The Royal Neighbors held a brief business meeting Tuesday evening with hostesses Mrs. Roy Vaughn Mrs. Arthur Michels and Mrs. Oscar Stephens. The next gathering is scheduled for November 17.
County Attorney O. J. Paulson cites a state secretary of state's reminder that election law violations include political posters and stickers on moving or parked cars near polling places. He notes the broad legal language could cover displaying ads that influence voters on election day.
Mrs. Inga C. Loftsgaarden 78 a longtime Big Timber resident died Saturday at the Big Timber Rest Home due to infirmities of age. Born June 13 1886 in Sauk Centre Minnesota she married Carl Loftsgaarden in 1909 and moved to Powell Wyoming then to Big Timber in 1911 where she lived until her death. She belonged to the Big Timber Lutheran church Lutheran Ladies Aid and the Pythian Sisters. Survived by two sons Owen Power Montana and Clarence Los Angeles a brother Albin Larson Havre four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held yesterday at the Big Timber Lutheran church with Rev Lyle Onstad Bozeman officiating. Music by Mrs Margaret Busha and Mrs A Ronald McDonnell. Pallbearers Clyde Davis Aloe Warila Harold Boe John Boe Sr A C McDonald Hubert Becken. Interment Mountain View.
Community groups organize Halloween events for children of all ages. Pre schoolers meet at Congregational church 6:30 sponsored by Royal Neighbors and Woman's club. Grades 1 and 2 gather at the Dugout 7 pm hosted by American Legion and Auxiliary. Grades 3 and 4 at Fraternity hall 7 pm hosted by Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters. Grades 5 and 6 at Masonic Temple 7 pm hosted by Masons and Eastern Star. Grades 7 and 8 dance 8 to 11 at Moose Lodge hosted by Jaycees and Jayceens with Mal Goosey and Bill Cole. Teen dance at high school hot lunch room with The Jupiters. Moose Lodge and Women of the Moose serve lunch. Lions club show films at all parties from first through sixth grades.
Yellowstone County commissioner Joe Josephson age 58 died of a heart attack. He moved to Lockwood to start the Lockwood Hybrid Hog Farm, operated it until fall 1963. Surviving relatives include his widow and daughter Richard Josephson of Big Timber.
Tom Anderson 81 lifelong Sweet Grass county resident and 24-year county commissioner died unexpectedly last Thursday of a heart attack while in his yard. Services Monday at Big Timber Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. Lyle Onstad with music by Mrs. A Ronald McDonnell and Mrs. Margaret Busha. Burial at Mountain View. Survivors include four sons Kermit Leif Thorvald and Carl of Melville two daughters Mabel Grosfield and Ruth Rein a brother Reider Anderson and a sister Mrs Ola Ostenson sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Red Lodge and Huntley Project lead a three way tie for first after Week 9 with Forsyth and Columbus close behind. Harlowton beat Absarokee as Roundup and Lodge Grass lose, with games Friday and Saturday shaping final position. No playoffs planned if ties persist. co champions likely.
The smallest paddlefish ever reported to the Fish and Game Department was netted from Fort Peck reservoir in Montana waters by commercial fishermen. The eight inch specimen is nearly half its length due to the protractile snout.
Michael Angelo Cantrell, 27, was captured last week in Fort Cobb Oklahoma and held on burglary charges in Boulder and here. A second suspect remains at large. Cantrell is sought for questioning in the Timber Bar burglary and allegedly took 900 silver dollars from a Boulder bar. Boulder Sheriff seeks extradition. a hold will be placed on Cantrell upon return.
K. C. Jones reports about 200 Legionnaires and auxiliaries are expected for the annual fall meeting of Legion district No. 7 in the Legion hall this Saturday October 31. The eight posts in south central Montana include Bozeman Big Timber Livingston White Sulphur Springs West Yellowstone Manhattan Three Forks and Gardiner. Wallace Skinner of Manhattan will preside at the business session. State officers Pat Kelley Chet Shore and Charles Nicholson will attend the meeting.
The Farm Bureau Talent Show drew nine contestants in two age groups. In 6 to 11, Jimmy Hathaway won with Cowboy. runners up were the Fellows girls for Crooked Little Man. In 12 to 16, Karlyn and Lynda Bue won with Shake Me I Rattle and Whispering Hope. Linda Fellows took second with Malaguena.
Sweet Grass County High School announces its annual open house for Thursday November 5 at 7 30 pm. The event includes class sessions for parents a coffee hour and time to meet teachers. Report cards first quarter ending tomorrow will be given to attending parents.
Mrs Eugene Bart of Madrid woke to an elephant in her yard eating apples. The barking dog alerted her and police arrived with a circus animal trainer. The elephant had strayed from a circus encampment nearby.
Phil Weaver of Washington D C, a special agriculture secretary's consultant, toured Sweet Grass county with ASCS and SCS hosts. He visited Broadus and Big Timber focusing on Rural Areas Development aims to raise rural incomes, preserve farms, train youth, and expand recreation and water-friendly projects. Weaver praised local example farms and fish ponds like the Hoopers, noting ASCS cost-share support and SCS planning backing.
Mrs Nealie Phillips, 90, died Saturday in Aberdeen S D of coronary failure while visiting her son Wayne. She was born March 15 1874 in Cedar Grove Missouri and later lived in Oregon Big Timber and nearby areas. Survived by three sons six daughters and many grandchildren. Funeral services held at Lowry Chapel with Rev W F Clingman officiating.

A Cincinnati youth, 14, shattered a drugstore window during a downtown escape from a 48-year-old girlfriend. Police say he explained the shattered glass followed a failed kiss attempt as he fled at night.
