Second Lieutenant Carl Ostenson, 22, son of Mrs Illa Ostenson of Reed Point, was killed in action in France on October 4. He enlisted August 9, 1943, trained at Fort Benning and Camp Shelby, and served in an infantry unit. He was a Reed Point High School and Montana State College graduate, ROTC veteran, and acting captain. He leaves a mother, three brothers and a sister, and was engaged to Geraldine Neumann.

The independent Big Timber Home Telephone Co owned by Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Haas has moved into the former Scandinavian American bank building. The move began 7:30 PM Saturday. by 7:30 AM Sunday the last connection was made for about 1,800 lines, with 600 hooked up overnight. Emergency long distance service stayed active as calls from California and Boston came through. Five operators run 24 hours from the 35 by 70 foot brick building with basement and air conditioning. The business, bought July 1, 1926, is now the second largest among 80 independent Montana companies and the busiest per capita, indicating strong faith in its future.
