Douthett Ice House Fire Marks End of an Era
Douthett's old ice house on the Yellowstone river bank near the depot burned Saturday afternoon. Volunteers reached the scene in 30 seconds, setting a city record. The sawdust-filled remains burned again Monday night as wind fed smoldering embers. The 500 ton capacity ice house had long served Big Timber, employing up to 30 men during harvest. Decline came with electric refrigeration and by 1936 37 Douthett advertised for advance orders before natural ice was discontinued. The roof was removed but the main structure remained solid.

Plane crash in Coquille kills three navy flyers
