Steve Smith, ten, son of Mr and Mrs Russ Smith, won this weeks Who's Who Contest. C F Ullman presented the $5 prize money. The prize now stands at $125 as Steve’s clues were incorrect. Frank Prevost drew the entry. Contest is number 12 with three to go.
The Montana School Boards association held its annual meeting in Helena with about 150 trustees clerks and administrators in attendance. Key speakers urged board responsibility for improving education amid rising federal involvement and warned that funding changes could pressure local boards to act or be superseded.
Oscar Stone and Louis Plagge Meyers of the Big Timber chapter traveled to Kansas City Missouri October 12 to 15 for the national FFA conclave. They joined a Vesper Service program with national officers, toured the Twin Cities, and saw the National FFA Band and a speaking contest. The event drew about 10 000 members from all states.
Bud Templeton 46 was pulled from the Snake River near Almora October 14. Funeral services were held October 18 at Bruning Funeral Home Colfax with interment there. Autopsy results pending. He worked mainly in harvesting nearby and is survived by a sister in New Mexico an uncle in Oregon and an aunt in Montana. He grew up in Sweet Grass county and was a 1936 Sweet Grass county high school graduate.
The Sweet Grass County Democratic Central Committee met Monday to elect officers for a two year term. Officers chosen were Owen McCleerey as county chairman Clarence Pile as vice chairman Helen McAuslan secretary treasurer Sidney Fraser Jr. as state committeewoman Claude Gray as state committeeman. Mrs. Fraser and Mrs. McCleerey reported on the Helena meeting.
High school students receive prizes for their magazine drive success with awards handed out yesterday.
Mr and Mrs Bob Davis were honored at an open house Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 pm at the home of Bob s mother Mrs Paul Davis The event featured yellow and white decorations a cake iced in white with yellow mums and a reception lineup including Miss Susan Davis Miss Kristi Davis and Tracy Davis Guests included Mrs David Olsen formerly Rolla Davis of San Francisco plus hostesses Mrs H H Cook and Mrs C E Petaja.
The Big Timber Reserves defeated the Harlowton Reserves 264 last Monday evening. Kim Tyler led the offense catching nearly every pass from Frosh QB Chuck Hauge. Jim Ellison Kevin Halverson and Mike Ludwick starred on offense and defense with solid line play from Rick Movius Chuck Jones Clyde Bainter Ken Hajek and Rick Jarrett. Mr and Mrs Percy Cox arrived Friday from Missoula for a week at the Dudley Tyler ranch.
Anton Fredrickson, 85, died early yesterday at Community Hospital from infirmities of age. His sole surviving relative in the state is cousin James B. Jenson of St. Ignatius, who will arrive today to arrange the funeral.
A Sunday gathering honored Mr. and Mrs. Harold Shepard on their twenty fifth anniversary at the family home. Guests from Bridger Bel fry Laurel and nearby towns attended a pot luck meal with a two tiered cake baked by Mrs. Bakker and Mrs. Michael. Gene Shepard, serving at Randolph Field Texas, phoned in as well.
About 20 women attended the Democratic Women's Club lunch at Frye's Café. Guest speaker Mrs. Gladys Makela of Red Lodge discussed women's influence in politics and club activities from county precincts to the national level. Mrs. Dorothy Edson of Harlowton spoke on the Northern Regional Governors meeting in Salt Lake City. Regular meetings move to the third Thursday of each month.
Ford's punt pass and kick contest held Saturday crowned winners by age group. Eight year olds Jimmy Graham first Tracy Mosness second Mark Egeland third. Nine year olds Michael Henthorne first Ronnie Rue second Mike Sell third. Ten year olds Doad Tyler first Tom Petaja second Steve Mahlum third. Eleven year olds Rick Dieterich first Jeff Cook second Larry Lee third. Twelve year olds Dennis Henthorne first Kelly Goosey second Bob Buster third. Thirteen year olds Bud Etsold first Brent Moschelle second Steve Thompson third.
Harry Shipton, born July 28 1896 in Big Timber son of Tom and Mrs Shipton, died recently. Funeral was at Imminity hospital with organist E O Overlamb. burial followed at Mountain View. Survivors include widow Menda Gunderson two daughters Ida Hauge and Della Wardell a son Harold Shipton two brothers Alvin Shipton and others.
High school students urge listings for the band calendar with a deadline of Monday Oct 25. Call band instructor Mr Paul Nelson or aides Mrs Helmar Cook or Mrs Owen McCleerey to get a calendar. Costs 2.00 for a family listing 1.00 for a single. Extra calendars 1.00 each. Proceeds support band needs.
County ASCS office accepts nominating petitions for Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee seats. Deadline is November 1. Any farm owner operator or tenant active in ASCS programs may file a petition or submit a written record to nominate a candidate.
The local M.E.A. group will stage The Little Minister a drama adaptation of J M Barrie’s novel. Cast features five men and six women with performance set for late January or early February at the group’s venue.
The state president of the Jaycees announces turkey shoots to be held November 14 and 21 at the trap range at the fairgrounds. The events aim to provide hunters a chance to win birds to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Local Red Cross volunteers met at Frye's Cafe to welcome W. S. Stutsman from Bozeman as the new Five Rivers chapter manager replacing Elliot Converse Jr. He described Hurricane Betsy as the largest Red Cross disaster and noted thousands still on relief lines with housing scarce. Montana sent rescue workers and more are urged.
Superintendent A C McDonald of the grade school received an invitation to participate as a consultant in a conference on mathematics training for elementary teachers to be held in Great Falls October 25 26 under the direction of the Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics Berkeley Calif
The Harlowton Engineers defeated the Sheepherders 34 to 46 on a rain soaked local field. Roger Zikmund rushing repeatedly broke through Herders tacklers for long gains and sparked a 20 point second quarter as Harlo built a 27 0 halftime lead. John Ellison scored for the Herders and Big plays by Robert Galahan on defense set up Engineers scores. Big Timber drop leaves them 3 3 with two games left while Harlo remains in the conference race with one defeat.
Mr and Mrs Bruce Purcell announce the birth of a daughter born October 19 at Community hospital weighing 4 pounds 7 ounces.
Mr and Mrs R H Cunningham were guests of honor at an open house Sunday October 17 in Reed Point gym. The event was planned by local families and Bil lings guests. An afternoon program featured songs skits and a piano duet with a three tier cake and lily of the valley decorations.
