A portable welder trailer wheel detached on Highway 10 near Ore Motor Co. The wheel rolled along the road, turned onto McLeod Street between two parked cars, swerved past a crash, struck the Solberg store, then rode the sidewalk to the block’s center before stopping.
Victor Schriver won the grand prize a 4H call during Mystery Days on Saturday. A six year old bystander John Goosey Jr drew the winning name. Governor Donald Nutter of Montana refused to proclaim United Nations Day on Oct 24, deeming the UN a debating forum at odds with U.S. interests. He warned of criticism, cited voting inequities, and noted his appointment of Arthur Lamey as Montana UN chairman to work with like minded citizens.
The FHA district 10 convened in Big Timber with 148 girls in attendance from Livingstown Clo dge Park Laurel Fromberg Bridger Red Lodge Joliet and Big Timber. All offices were filled by Joliet members and the convention was considered a success.
A Starr Motors organized Punt Pass and Kick contest drew 66 participants with winners across six to ten year olds. First place earns uniforms, seconds warmup jackets, thirds footballs, and a special fourth for eight year olds due to entries. First place scorers advance to regional finals with other regions.
Montana public schools received a record 17 million dollars in state aid for transportation and general operations for the year ending June. The average per pupil allocation was 122 dollars, up two dollars from the prior year, with 39 million drawn from school lands. The rise reflects the 1940 foundation program and equalization grants aiming to balance rich and poor districts, while state funding cannot exceed 50 percent of a school's foundation program.
The Fraser Hereford ranch 17 miles east of Big Timber on Highway 10 hosts its eighth annual production sale Friday October 20. Lunch at noon followed by sale at 1 o'clock. Ninety five head including yearling bulls bull calves heifer calves and some cow and calf pairs from Evan Mis chief Tex Regent and Zato Heir breeding will be offered. Norm Warsinski of Billings serves as auctioneer.
The Big Timber Sheepherders meet the Forsyth Dogies at home on Wednesday October 25 in their final 1961 season game. Kickoff is at 8 p m to avoid the teachers convention on October 26-27.

Key plays include Harry Berg plunging for a TD and Walt Huyser recovering a blocked punt for a score as the Herder defense stifles the Red Lodge attack. Berg adds a second TD as Big Timber climbs into a two way tie for second in the conference behind Absarokee.
Senator Mansfield warned of a darker Berlin outlook and outlined U S and world challenges including Laos Vietnam the Near East Africa Cuba and Brazil He urged initiative against Soviet moves and noted defense moves such as 155 Minuteman missile sites in Montana while praising federal aid and farm programs In closing he said the president should have bipartisan support and that if he wins or loses Americans share the outcome
Robert Zeiler age 52 of Billings died of a heart attack about 7 a m Sunday while hunting four miles north of Big Timber. He and his son had shot a deer and were dragging it to the car when he collapsed. He was a Pierce Packing Co meat cutter and had worked in Sweet Grass county. He was born December 18 1909 in Billings and married Dorothy Black in 1943. Survivors include his widow two sons a daughter a sister and four brothers. Funeral services and burial were in Billings.
Lon L Blanscet 65 father of Mrs. William Kinsey died at Community hospital Monday after a illness attributed to cancer. He was born October 6 1896 in Altus Arkansas and lived in Delhi Oklahoma before moving to Texas and Montana. He farmed ranch and served as Gray County sheriff and WWII guard chief. Survived by widow daughter two brothers and four grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. from Lowry Chapel.
The Sweet Grass Sheepherders B squad shut out Absarokee Huskies 13-0. After a scoreless first half, Gene Langhus powered in the first TD, Larry McBride added the extra point, and Tom Biglen sealed the win with a late rushing TD. Rich Paulsen led the offense at QB.
Plans to enlarge the Midland Empire Girl Scout Council to include Sweet Grass and Park counties were reviewed in Billings last week. Attending were Mrs Van Moschelle Mrs Henry McCauley and Mrs Dean Lowry from Big Timber with executive director Mrs Harry Turner and national staff member Miss Milda Suselis of Seattle. The national convention approved measures to expand and consolidate Montana from 15 councils to four larger councils.
