The Sheepherders thank Sweet Grass county football fans for 1961 season support. Big Timber supporters' turnout in Absarokee impressed the team and they pledge to work harder to deserve the audience's encouragement.
John Jacobs of the Big Timber Jaycees congratulates Sweet Grass County High School student council president John Paulson for leadership and their stance on respect for the flag. He credits the council’s courage for promoting freedom and values in a civic minded tone.
Mr and Mrs Anthony Basonac were killed when their snow slid into the opposite lane and collided with a Chicago bound Greyhound bus on a Bozeman highway. Two bus passengers had minor injuries. Funeral services will be held in Billings.
Students gain an extra two days of vacation as teachers attend district MBA conventions. No classes for all grades this Thursday and Friday while local teachers participate in the Billings sessions.
Final plans were announced for the 10th annual Youth Honor Day Halloween parties on Tuesday night October 31. Events span from preschool at Congregational church basement to 8 to 11 pm dances in the high school and Moose venues with costumes, cartoons, movies, games, treats, refreshments, and music by the Rhythm Ramblers.
National Education Week will run November 5 to 11 with the theme Your Schools Time for a Progress Report. Open House is moved to November 2 to fit report card distribution after quarterly testing.
The Women of the Moose sponsor the annual Red Heart Tag day on Saturday. Proceeds benefit the Montana Children's Home and Hospital for crippled children. Big Timber children sell tags on the street and will receive a hot lunch at the Moose hall at noon. the top seller wins a prize.
Red Cross home nursing and care of the sick and injured classes will be held on November 7 8 9 14 15 17 21 from 7 to 9 30 p m in the library basement. The course builds family confidence in at home care reduces complications and teaches habits for better daily living and disaster readiness. Instructors are Mrs B Olness and Mrs Pearl Miller.
The Montana Institute of Arts traveling exhibit will be shown in Big Timber from Monday November 30 through Saturday November 4. The show is sponsored by the Big Timber Woman's Club and Crazy Mountain Arts and Crafts group. A jury selected the paintings and crafts from a state wide competition of M I A members. The display, in the Montana Power office, runs 9 am to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm each evening.
Nominating petitions for agricultural stabilization and conservation committeemen for 1962 are due by November 6 at the county ASCS office. Each petition must be signed by 10 bona fide voters and may nominate up to 10 persons for five county seats. Eligible candidates must be local residents, voters in ASC elections, not currently or formerly on an elective governing body within the past year, and not full time USDA employees. Petitions can be filed at the Big Timber ASCS office or with the current county committee chairman. Election by mail will occur in late November.
Mr and Mrs J B Hefty of Rowan have been visiting at the Mehus home for several days.
The home demonstration council meeting was held Monday with four clubs represented. Mrs. Lester Faw presided assisted by Mrs. Louise Shunk district 1 extension supervisor. Topics selected for next year include Civil Defense Laundering and Care of New Fabrics Consumer Education Time Management Know Your Government Food Sanitation Heart Disease and Gift Novelties. Two new officers were elected for two year terms Mrs F B Peterson president and Mrs Martyn Orange vice president.
Barbara Holland daughter of Mrs Louis Beley was called to Whittier California Sunday by the death of her father Jee Holland who died Saturday of a heart attack Born in Bozeman October 23 1914 he attended Fort Story school later lived in Greybull Wyoming He worked on Louis and Hans Beley ranches and was foreman for Sunmark Supply Co in Los Angeles Funeral services were held yesterday at Rosehill Memorial Park Whittier
Shorthorn cattle drew strong bids at the Montana Shorthorn Association feeder sale in Billings. An extra good heifer led at 35.40 dollars per hundredweight, Roy Gefller reports, with his own consign ment at 32. Loads and pens mostly exceeded 30 dollars, steer top reached 34.50, and loads ranged from 32 to 33.80 while no load fell below 28.80.
The highway patrol and sheriff officers investigated multiple auto accidents with no serious injuries. Lloyd Parish of Livingston collided with John A. Faw at Otter creek turnoff on Highway 19. Gerald Hantz of Belle Fourche overturned on Highway 10 west of town. no injuries. Honora Dickie of Nova Scotia escaped injury when her trailer house overturned near Grey Cliff. Edwin Barta of Billings lost control on Highway 10 near Springdale after hitting a slick spot. Several vehicles left Highway 19 after last week’s storm with little damage.
Eleven weary searchers returned from Big Pine basin as darkness moved into the Absaroka mountains without clues to missing hunter Delmar Berg from Billings. Park County Sheriff Albert Nickelson said he was not optimistic about finding Berg alive after a two hour aerial search over the area yielded no new information.
Deisy Lamach of Big Timber was elected president with Etta Webb of Park County High as vice president and Karalee Stewart of Columbia Falls as secretary at the Montana Interscholastic Editorial Association meeting in Missoula. Lamach, Timberline editor and Sweet Grass County senior, leads youth fellowship and band and Thespians. Sweet Grass High received superior ratings. 32 superiors and eight goods were awarded for yearbooks.
The Sheepherders beat Absarokee 13 6 to move into a first place tie with Huntley Project in the southern Class B conference with two games left. Huntley Project defeated Roundup 20 7 as five teams remain in the title race.
Ellena Fay Erickson, 18, of Big Timber, died in a traffic crash near Blackfoot Idaho. Her husband Frank Erickson and two Mexican drivers were injured. she had recently joined her husband at Blackfoot where he works. Funeral services were held at Lowry Chapel with burial at Mountain View.
Mrs. Ray Collins of Big Timber is named by John H. Casebolt executive director of the Montana Tuberculosis Association to represent the MTA in Sweet Grass county. She will assist with health education case-finding and TB control and take part in the annual Christmas Seal fund drive. Casebolt notes deaths have fallen but new cases remain high and early detection is essential to eradicating TB in Montana.
Claude C. Gray announced the Farmers Service Assn. of Big Timber will receive 2850 dollars in cash to retire patronage refund stock from the Farmers Union Central Exchange. This marks the second cash redemption in six months and retires the remainder of 1951 stock and half of 1952. Co-ops strengthen rural communities by boosting local buying power and supporting smaller towns.
