Scholastic commendations go to Pat Hansen and Sharon Tollefson of SGHS for high performance on the 1969 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. They rank among the nation’s top two percent of high school graduates, with 39 000 commended students.
The Montana Wheat Research and Marketing Commission says the United States has cut its wheat export prices three times to counter reductions by Canada, Australia and France. The shifts come as exporting countries expand their acreages outside the United States.

Fairview Ranch of Big Timber placed for reserve junior Angus champions at the 1969 Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland. Berger of Fair View SI and Pride of Fair View 156 were named reserve junior champion bull and heifer respectively, with Fair View also taking second in another class. Angus breeders from the West Coast to Nebraska presented 77 heifers and eight bulls before judge George Strathearn of San Francisco.
Huntley Project defeated Big Timber 24 to 12 on a snow soaked field as the Sweet Grass High School homecoming main event. Dan Kautz scored twice for Huntley Project, with Paul Oblander adding two first half TDs and Brent Moschelle breaking a 40 yard punt return. Big Timber’s defense featured eleven tackles by Bill Erickson while Rick Henthorn left the game with a shoulder injury. The Herders next travel to Lodge Grass with Big Timber to host Red Lodge in the final Midland Empire clash of the season.
Total of 856 fires burned about 3000 acres, the lowest annual acreage since 1965. Dry summer contributed to the record low, with the Nor thern Region reporting a four year minimum.
Best West Tours Inc unveils the Big Timber Boat Float as part of a 1970 tour schedule with twelve trips on a five night six day route starting and ending in Billings. The itinerary includes Chief Plenty Coups home Yellowtail Dam Custer Battlefield Lewis and Clark float on the Yellowstone River Virginia City Madison earthquake area and Yellowstone National Park. Common carrier air conditioned buses will be leased. Donna May, president, says most riders will be from out of state. Officers include Andrew Beardsley and John J. Kelly.
The week of October 12 18 is proclaimed in Montana by Governor Forrest Anderson. The state hosts 142 credit unions with 70000 members and assets over 42 million dollars.
Vernel Wagner a 14 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs David Wagner has a drawing Head Study of an Arabian horse named as one of sixteen finalists to be exhibited at the Arabian Horse Museum in Barnesville Maryland just outside Washington DC The study was on display from June 15 through August 31.
Sweet Grass high school will join 21 bands including Rocky Mountain College marching band for Band Day on Saturday October 18 as part of Homecoming events. Parade from Cobb Field at 10 a.m. leads to rehearsals at Pioneer Park and pre game show at 1 15 followed by a 1 30 Frontier Conference game Rocky vs Montana School of Mines.
Olufine Stenberg admitted October 11 for medical care. Mrs. Kenneth Fike admitted October 13 for medical care. Delbert McGuire of Bozeman admitted October 14 for medical care. Alvina Malley admitted October 14 for medical care.
Funeral services were held in Anchorage on Monday October 6 for E J Blair brother of W N Blair of Big Timber and Nora Fraser of Reed Point He died Friday October 3 in Alaska where he operated heavy equipment During residence in Sweet Grass county he worked on roads and highways operating a drag line Mrs Chester Fraser and Major J C Blair nephew flew to attend the services in Alaska
The Big Timber Lions Club voted to endorse eliminating primitive areas and return to regular multiple use administration after Tom Findley presented the CDO proposal to gauge public sentiment on reclassification of Absaroka and Beartooth primitive areas. The club noted forthcoming forest study work and watershed and water impacts, with several members favoring wilderness designation, but a majority preferred the multiple use approach.
