Local rancher complains of blocked alleys and bread trucks double parked near the Pioneer office. Drivers report rugged access and difficulty leaving destinations. Community groups joke about wind and a plane sighting over town with little movement.
Principal Gilman Aller jokes that students appear nearly 100 percent compliant with no smoking on campus, while many parents at school events openly smoke and discard cigarette butts around the grounds. He suggests posting no smoking signs and stepping outside briefly to smoke.
The W. C. T. U. will meet with Mrs. Anton Grande on Wednesday December 1 at 2 30. Alexander Gigliotti of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania was fined 25 dollars for reckless driving by Justice of the Peace J D Holly after a car wreck at the Mendenhall Creek bridge on Highway 10 Sunday night. Gigliotti said he fell asleep while driving. He was scratched and bruised. A hitchhiker Henry Lanagan sustained head injuries and was taken to the Veterans Hospital at Ft Harrison for treatment. The car was demolished.
Local items report Mrs. Ed Carney leaving for Minneapolis to join her husband. Clara Brown seeks letters of administration for Albert J. Brown's estate. Postmaster Nicholson urges early mailing for Christmas deliveries before December 15 for out of state and December 20 for local mail.
Death Valley Scotty Walter E. Scott, aged about 76, says a fortune of 600000 in pure gold is hidden in Grapevine canyon near Death Valley. He recounts a 50 50 split with Albert M. Johnson, notes tax battles, and plans to reveal his wealth without the tax collectors taking a share.
W G Maloney district manager of the United States department of commerce in Butte states complete information is available on parcel post gift packages to most countries. Memoranda cover allowable items limits foreign duties and restrictions and are free to request by writing to the U S Department of Commerce Butte Montana specifying desired countries.
Pete Egeland of Livingston and Mrs. Toby Osen were hurt when a car driven by Egeland struck a cow near Wormser grade turnoff on Melville highway. Albert Osen, en route to a doctor for appendicitis, was shaken but uninjured. Mrs. Osen required about 20 stitches for a head wound. Egeland had back injuries and bruises as the car overturned. The cow reportedly escaped injury.
The state fish and game department reminds hunters that special elk permits are allotted on a first come first served basis and cost $1. The law determines recipients, not the order of arrival. Permits for killing 80 elk in the Highwood mountains will be sold Saturday with 40 at 1000 at Geyser and 40 at 1400 at Highwood, season runs Sunday to December 31. A second season allows 150 branch antlered bulls south of Dillon with 50 sold in Dillon, another 50 on November 27 and December 4. Highwood area defined as parts of Chouteau and Judith Basin counties south of township lines and west of the Geraldine-Geyser road through Marrimack Cattle Co. land.
Madame Chiang Kai shek broadcast from Nanking appeals for immediate American aid to prevent China and all Asia from falling to the Communists. She warns of grave national danger and says Asia's peace depends on China.
The Sweet Grass county high school Sheepherders open the basketball season with two games this weekend. They meet Gardiner Friday and Clyde Park here Saturday in the first home game. Coach McElwain has twenty candidates, with Gordon Boyd captain and Eddie Gunderson at center.
The telegram reports Mrs. L V Patterson died in an automobile accident near Gillette Wyoming. Her two sons King and John Lukkes were seriously injured while returning from South Dakota where they visited her father. Mr Patterson departs for Gillette today.
More than 600 guests attended the Vaughn-Ragsdale housewarming party Thursday evening to celebrate extensive improvements including rear store room expansion and new display shelves. Five door prizes were awarded to J. L. White Donna Haifer Mrs. Ed Gayne Harold Miosness and Norman Hauge. Coffee and doughnuts were served. Local staff attending included Ida Hauge Rita Christensen Mary Osterhout George Ward with offices staff Leo Waller Larry Johnson Hazel Skipp and H. G. Anderson.
The American Legion basketball team begins its season Saturday night at home against the Livingston Elks. Manager Jim Brannin leads a roster including Chuck Nicholson Roy Ellison Bill Ellison Al Deegan Bob Deegan Herb McCauley Harold O'Dell Don Cameron and Tommy Armstrong. The team is reaching out to local independents Stockmen's and Shadow's of Billings for strong showings this season.
Mrs. C. F. Ullman entertained the I. L. B club with a dessert luncheon Monday afternoon. Mrs. Ross Williams won high score and Mrs. Ullman was second high.
Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Tronrud Jr. left on a motor trip to Chicago last Thursday to visit his brother Robert who is attending school there. They plan to stay until after Thanksgiving. Funeral services were held in Lewistown for Louis Henry Nelson. He died at a Billings hospital Friday.
An organizing meeting at Ruth's cafe resulted in the formation of the Big Timber Rifle and Pistol Club with Leo Ray as temporary chairman. John Goosey was elected president and Oscar Fallang Jr. as secretary, with dues set at 2 dollars plus NRA dues. Charter members named include Samuel Lien and Walter Osborne. future indoor and outdoor ranges were discussed but no action taken.
Birthday dinner Sunday honored Martin and John Drivdahl at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Drivdahl. Attendees included the Drivdahls and extended family such as O. C. Drivdahl Louis Drivdahl Cherrill Donnie Lamach Laura Roberta Lamach Teresea Emil Jr and David Drivdahl.
