Victor Allman announced the sale of his Melville trucking business to Sidney Bud James who took over last Thursday. Allman has run the business for 27 years, started with a Graham Bros G-Boy bought in August 1927 from Ellingson garage in Big Timber. The Allmans will stay in Melville. Mrs. Allman is post mistress and Vic will continue carpentry work.
Sweet Grass county kicks off its Christmas Seal campaign by the Montana Tuberculosis Association on November 16. Dr. Olive Baskett and Mrs. H A Anderson say effort aims to protect children and eradicate TB with public support. Volunteers from the Big Timber Woman's Club prepare letters and join seals in presenting the TB program to residents.
Veterans Day will be marked with short programs at the grade and high schools on Friday November 11. Col Wallis Huidekoper speaks at the grade school at 10 30 with color guards from the American Legion Auxiliary present. Clive Haas speaks at the high school at 11 30 broadcast on KPRK. music department provides entertainment. Local stores will close in honor of veterans.
Montana physicians and pharmacies were notified that all persons 1 through 14 years old plus expectant mothers are eligible for polio vaccine. Dr. G D Carlyle Thompson said the broadened priority, approved by the State Board of Health, aims to inoculate more children with one dose now and a booster after 7 months, though vaccine supply may not cover the new group before 1955 ends.
The Lions Club of Big Timber criticized the Northern Pacific and post office department over recurring mail pouch breakage on a fast train route. They urged trains to slow through town or seek a city speed ordinance, warning of formal action if cooperation fails.
The Sweet Grass County Farm Bureau launches the annual operation membership campaign November 17 and 18 in coordination with the Montana Farm Bureau. County quota is 148 with Dick Irwin as local president inviting farmers to join. A statewide kickoff in Great Falls November 16 features Dr. Kenneth Hood, with Bucklee and other county captains attending.
Dry Creek 4 H Wranglers held Achievement Night at the schoolhouse with a weiner roast and hayride. County Agent F B Peterson awarded pins and a seven year service ring plus four state awards. Ellis Faw won first in state beef judging. Gerald Scholten presided as club president.
Good weather and crowd drive Fraser Hereford sale last Friday. Top bull FHR Mischief 73 sold to Gross ranch for $1,000. second high FHR Mischief 68th bought by Morris Tronrud. Seventy-five lots sold in just over 3 hours for a $344 average with buyers from North and South Dakota and Montana.
Henry J. Jondrow, 78, a retired Northern Pacific engineer from Livingston, died of a heart attack while hunting ducks with his son near Big Timber. He was found along the Yellowstone river after a daylong search. funeral services are planned for Saturday. Survivors include his widow and son.
Polio vaccine for eligible children is now available through doctors in Big Timber. Dr. D. Claiborn, county health officer, announced the program. Children between 3 and 14 years old are eligible. The state board of health hopes to inoculate all eligible children by December 1.
The Evening Circle of the Lutheran Ladies Aid will meet at 8 o'clock tonight at the home of Mrs Andy Strickland.
Thelma Leonard of Chinook, associate grand matron of the Eastern Star of Montana, visits Sweet Grass chapter No. 22 with a luncheon and banquet at Dallman hall and Masonic temple. Guests include Amanda Boston, Theresa Traufer, Lucian Smith, John Traufer, and local members from Livingston, Wilsall, Harlowton, Billings, Laurel, Reed Point and Columbus. An initiation followed a 6:30 buffet.
Montana highway patrol reports 42 October highway deaths, the highest month in state history. Twenty four fatal crashes killed 42 people, with drinking drivers involved in at least 15 incidents. Inattention, misjudgment and speeding cited as main factors.
The Pioneer and local firms launch a Mystery Air Photo contest with cash and merchandise prizes. Readers identify a ranch pictured in this week’s 11x14 photo. entries close Wednesday. Winners are drawn from correct entries, and occupants receive the enlarged print.
Arthur Boettcher was appointed by Mayor Harold Roe to lead the S D Day Safe Driving campaign in Sweet Grass County. Governor Aronson urged action for the second annual effort, noting the phase begins November 21 and peaks December 1 with the goal of cutting traffic deaths and injuries.
Milton Zimmerman, chief executive of the Yellowstone Valley Boy Scout Council, announced Tuesday his resignation effective December 1. He has led the council since January 1, 1947, with membership rising from 85 units and 1,908 boys to 152 units and 3,909 boys as of November 1, 1955, covering 21 counties from Three Forks to the North Dakota line. The Rev Donald Scanlin said the post will be filled as soon as possible.
The Big Timber Woman's Club invites all county children to National Book Week November 14 to 18. A display of children's books will be in the library basement and books are available from the library. Evening events run 7 to 8 pm Monday through Friday with reviews, tastings of new books, FHA entertainment, musical readings, and poetry readings by local presenters to spark interest in reading and library use.
Mrs Rose Bray and her daughter Kay are in Great Falls as Kay receives medical care.
The Sweet Grass County Woolgrowers Association holds its annual meeting Friday November 11 with a noon luncheon at the Legion hall. Officers will be elected in the afternoon and a banquet will close the day at the Moose hall at 7 PM. Congressman Orvin B. Flare will speak and attendees from Montana State College Bozeman are expected. Musical entertainment directed by Mal Goosey is planned at both Legion and Moose halls.
The Local National Guard unit supplied a rasbile compressor and gasoline for three days to power air driven boiler tools at the high school. Their contribution enabled rapid work, high output, and kept costs low, for the on campus boiler project. The high school thanks the Guard for its efficiency and help on the home front.
