Mrs. Anne Grosfield presided at the County Federation of Women's Clubs annual fall meeting held yesterday in library rooms. A petition on northeast town cleanup was to be drawn by Mrs. Ed Adam, Mrs. Pauline Chase, and Mrs. Elmer Arneson. The federation donated $50 to the Carnegie library for rural school children's books.
Dr Paul P Petticord president of Western Evangelical Seminary and long time EUB minister will lead Friday evenings EUB service at 8 with Mrs Petticord chalk artist. His sermon focus is Bible preaching and Word centered worship with chalk art trombone pictures and preaching. He has toured the US Canada Europe and Asia and owns 1900 colored slides of his world. The public is invited.
Mrs. Clara Zellers was admitted Monday and discharged the next day for medical care. Andrew Lavold of Lloydminster Sask is visiting and was admitted Friday with a mild stroke and is reported doing nicely. Mrs. Wayne Jones started as the first woman clerk at J. S. Solberg Co. store this week.
Merchants sponsor a weekly Mystery Air Photo contest in The Pioneer to honor farmers and ranchers in Sweet Grass county. First photo to appear next week with readers guessing the ranch. occupants receive a free 11x14 enlargement. Smaller copies and enlargements available. details to follow at opening.
The Duo 4-H club held Achievement night at the Dry Fork schoolhouse with a Halloween party. County Agent F B Peterson awarded pins and checks for yearly work including a seven year service ring. Joyce Eppens reported a 100 percent project and record book completion, with safety the main focus.
William Robert Stokes a long time Big Timber resident died after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held at Lowry Funeral Home with Rev. E Brentwood Barker officiating. Interment was at Mountain View. Survived by widow Rose and three children Bertha Cremer Lizzetta McCallum and Lloyd Stokes. Stokes was born in 1866 in Minnesota and lived in Montana since 1881 working as a plumber and later in cattle, meat and wholesale turkey and egg businesses.
The 1956 Oldsmobile debuts at Oie Motor Co with Starfire styling and a Hydramatic transmission. Chevrolet introduces its new models at Bouse Chevrolet including Rocket T-250 engines, Jet away feature, and 205 horsepower across 88, Super 88 and 98 lines.
S Sgt Harold Owens and S Sgt Arthur Pendleton of the Billings filter center visited the Glasston post and left 500 hour bars for many members including Mr and Mrs Bjorndal and Mr and Mrs Sherod. 250 hour bars were given to George Bjorndal and more names. 100 hour merit badges went to Debby Faw and others. Awards were presented by Mrs Bjarne Bjorndal during the achievement day at the Glasston school house.
Nebraska officials report Stanley Monger, recently acquitted of taking a car, left Halsey with $100 belonging to Mrs. Margaret Nelson and the 1947 Kaiser vehicle. The case followed two postponed matters including Aldrich vs Villella and Boe vs Bieber.
The American Legion and Auxiliary invite all members and prospective members to a free party at the Legion hall Saturday night. A 7 p.m. pot luck supper with music and dancing follows. Coffee and rolls are provided. A drawing for an electric frying pan will be held at 10 o'clock. ticket holders must be present. Wives and husbands of Legion and Auxiliary members are welcome.
Local plans are set for National Education Week November 6 12 at Sweet Grass county high and grade schools. Activities include student tours and class visits with coffee hours hosted by Future Homemakers and an evening program November 11 with parents and teachers in the grade school auditorium.
Women’s clubs in Sweet Grass County call on authorities to clear the Big Timber highway corridor where old cars, papers, and garbage have worsened the eye sore for years. Named clubs include Boulder Val Woman’s Club, Surprise Club, Bridger Creek Club, and members Miriam Michels and Pauline Chase.
Assoc. Grand Matron Thelma Leonard of Chinook will make her official visit to the local chapter on Friday November 4. A luncheon in her honor at noon in Dallman hall by the Past Matron's club with the Episcopal Guild serving. A 6:30 banquet at the Masonic temple and an evening meeting will follow with Lois Hatfield and O J Ellingson presiding.
Lucian Smith of Billings, worthy grand patron of Montana Order of Eastern Star, will visit the local chapter Friday with Thelma Leonard deputy for the grand matron. Mrs. Smith and Mr. Smith will attend the luncheon and banquet as guests of honor. Many members are hoped to attend the evening session.
Mrs. Stanley Hanson has been discharged from Park Hospital in Livingston and is recovering at home in Melville after thyroid surgery. Mrs. Leif Anderson substitutes at Melville School. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hart depart for La Jolla California to spend the winter, with Kermit Anderson driving them. Jeanne Wedel of Billings visits Melville, staying with Edith Malcolm while attending high school back home.
Funeral services for Sam D. Solberg 75 were held Saturday at Lowry Funeral Home. He died Wednesday at a Helena nursing home after a long illness. The Rev. Wne A Hood officiated with vocal selections by Mrs A Ronald McDonnell and Mrs Ted C Busha. Interment was at Mountain View. He was born in Glendale Montana and lived in Big Timber before working as a steam engineer and garage operator. He married Clara Roseland in 1928 and is survived by his widow, their son Sammy E Solberg, two sisters, three brothers, and other relatives.
Jacqueline Hinds, a United Airlines stewardess, died when the Colorado airliner crashed killing all 44 aboard. Born in Big Timber, she was the daughter of Mr and Mrs J B Hinds of Eugene Oregon, who lived in Big Timber when he taught at the high school and served as principal. The Hindses have three other daughters born in Big Timber.
W. H. Koons left yesterday for Garland Kansas to spend the winter with relatives. He notes it isn’t warmer there in winter but the eating is better.
