A petition from subscribers and a letter from Mrs. Ralph Ryan of the Women’s Christian Temperance union urge The Pioneer to drop liquor advertising to shield youth. The response argues ads influence youths less than other factors and urges focusing on broader temperance aims.
A poll of 21 Montana publishers by Fred J. Martin of the Park County News shows 21 expect Kennedy to lose, five expect victory, and four undecided. In county vote guesses Kennedy ranges under 40 percent for 16, 39 to 50 percent for two, over 50 percent for seven, with five undecided. the Republican opponent is John E. Henry.
A Montana church group pamphlet labeled Senator Cremer and Representative Esp as voting wrong on HB 1338 to legalize and tax slot machines. It failed to note SB 61 already passed, seeking voter approval on slots. The piece omits a large tax hike set by MIB 138, including 300 to 600 dollar per machine scales, replacing a 100 dollar license and federal tax.
Mr. and Mrs. H. H. McIntyre departed Wednesday by train for Chicago on a business trip. They will stop in Northfield Minnesota to visit their son Harvey at St. Olaf College and plan additional visits in Minneapolis.
The Moose lodge and Woman's club sponsored a Youth Honor Day at Moose Hall drawing most of the town's children. Preschool games and refreshments for younger children, roller skating and dancing for older youths, with prizes for three older participants. A signed pledge ensured property protection and Halloween mischief was minimal.
Senator Leo J. Cremer was feted at a stag party and steak supper at the Moose hall to mark his birthday. Orvin Flare praised him as a representative of the people as Mayor Harold Roe lauded Cremer’s projects and national exposure from rodeos.
Hoop tryouts for the 1950 51 season at Sweet Grass High School begin Monday under Coach Frank McElwain. He plans a 24 man squad with 12 on the A team 10 on B and two managers. The schedule opens Dec 1 with Billings Central on the Big Timber floor and runs through Feb 16 with Roundup here.
The W S W S church at EUB holds a Wednesday 2 30 meeting in church parlors with Mrs Howard Huxser in charge focusing on Thanksgiving. Mrs Q Huyser hosts. Members urged to bring boxes. Surprise kitchen shower for Mrs Arthur Berg at her home includes gifts and lunch. 40th anniversary party for Mr and Mrs John Weidinger at their Boulder home with family guests. A man named Don F Wayne detained in Billings after borrowing bedding from Olsen Auto Court. bedding recovered. Wayne to be charged in Billings for bad checks.
The Montana fish and game department clarifies hunting hours for the 1950 ring neck pheasant season. Opening day is Sunday November 5 with shooting from 12 noon to 5 pm, repeated Sunday November 12 as the final day. Weekday hours are 8 am to 5 pm with a daily bag limit of two and possession limit of two pheasants.
Mrs Keith Harlan was discharged from Park hospital in Livingston after treatment. A daughter, Deborah Lee, weighing 6 pounds 8 ounces, was born October 5 to Mr and Mrs Frank Gibson of War Renton Oregon. Mrs Gibson is the former Gloria Swanson. Dave Johnson and John Nicholson left Wednesday for Butte to enlist in the armed forces per Margaret Coster local secretary. The next craft board meeting is Monday November G.
Ardelle Marie Holland daughter of Mrs Ivar Holland and Harold John Dobbs son of Mrs Roy L Richardson of Waurika Oklahoma wed in a double ring ceremony at the Lutheran parsonage on Monday October 30 at 10 30 a m Attendants were Mr and Mrs Hilmar H Cook Rev E E Tollefson officiated The bride wore a wine gabardine suit with pink accessories and pink rose corsage The groom a Waurika and Portales New Mexico graduate served in the navy and works for Cities Service Oil Co They will reside at 518 Shawnee St Bartlesville Oklahoma after a brief honeymoon.
Big Timber will close stores and offices on Saturday November 11 Armistice Day. A local wedding trip saw Mrs Emma Barr and Miss Lottie Stubblefield travel to Wheatland Wyoming to attend Viggo Klein’s wedding on October 25.
A study of Mrs. Ole Rodwold and husband reveals Norwegian customs through heirlooms and souvenirs. Mrs. Rodwold, from Litlehammer near Oslo, recalls life in Norway and meets Dr. Anders Sandvig’s Maihaugen museum in Lillehammer, showcasing 18th century farm Bjornstad and related structures.
Polls open from 8 a m to 6 p m next Tuesday November 7 for Montana voters. Candidates listed include Wesley A O Ewart and John J Holmes for Congress, John E Henry for state treasurer, Leonard C Young and others for railroad and public service commissioner, and unopposed races for several county offices. Initiatives include amendments to Montana constitution on labor bureau separation and county indebtedness limits, a slot machine referendum, and a World War II veteran compensation proposal with bonds and an excise tax plan.
Harold McGrath is jailed after attempting to pawn a wrist watch for gas. A stolen 1949 Chevrolet pickup linked to his identity led Sheriff Osborne to arrest him near Big Timber. McGrath admits prior prison time in Wyoming, Montana, and a South Dakota forgery warrant. He awaits charges and possible FBI transfer.
Billings Central Rams overwhelmed the Sheepherders of Sweet Grass county 50 to 7 at Davies Stadium. Robbie Glennen opened with a long run, Don Brown caught a pivotal pass for a first down, and Glennen scored on the next play. Murphy added a late dropkick extra point as Ted Clark shone for Sweet Grass with versatile offense and defense.
The School Boards association endorsed a constitutional amendment to raise the bonding limit for school districts from 3 percent to 5 percent of assessed valuation. Officials cited rising birth rates and enrollment, warning of crowding and potential double shifts without more space. The measure, not a tax increase, would let voters approve bonds for school construction in areas needing capacity, on the November 7 ballot.
The Sheepherder gridders aim for their third win of the season when they face Red Lodge high school Friday afternoon at 2 o clock on the local field. Grade schoolers will be excused to attend. This is the final appearance for Sweet Grass high school seniors including Armstrong Christensen Ollestad Strickland Clark Sargent Weisland and Hoskinson. Art Dyer misses starting fullback due to a knee strain. Ronnie Dahl and John Cosgriff will play in that spot.
