Honor Night Award Winners List At High School Event

A Monday honor night at the high school presented numerous awards and scholarships. Janet Carl led with top honors, including valedictorian and multiple scholarships, along with recognitions for athletics, music, FFA, 4 H, citizenship, and community service from organizations such as Lions Club and American Legion.

Local Troop 521 Scouts Attend Mammoth Camporee

Eight members of Troop 521 plus leader Floyd Thomas attended the Yellowstone Valley Council Camporee at Mammoth Hot Springs. Participants included Brad Snodgrass Jim Graham Tracy Mosness Mike Henthorn Alan Petaja Jim Stephens Wesley Burg Ronnie Rue and Travis Thomas. They competed in events Saturday and demonstrated scouting skills with a campfire program by the U S Park Service. Troop 521 won first place in the Absaroka District knot tying. Thomas said the competition was keen the weather favorable and the camping enjoyable.

Funeral held for Kenneth J Boe at Big Timber Lutheran

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Big Timber Lutheran church for Kenneth J Boe 53 who died of a heart attack at his ranch Saturday Rev Eugene Nilsen officiated with E O Overland at the organ and singers including Mrs A Ron McDonnell Mrs Margaret Busha and Mrs Charles Nicholson. Burial followed in Mountain View cemetery. Boe born September 25 1915 in Lewistown moved to Big Timber as a child and graduated from Sweet Grass County High School in 1933 He married Ellen Osen August 9 1936 and remained active in ranching with his father later running the ranch He was a member of the Big Timber Lutheran church He was survived by his widow two sons Chuck and Johnny of Big Timber his father two brothers Miller Boe Lavina and Rasmus Boe McLeod two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Delegates Elect GOP Chairman At State Convention

Delegates from Sweet Grass County at the Helena GOP convention chose Ottley R. Tschache a Bozeman real estate man as party chairman for a two year term after Virginia Mann of Missoula retired. The vote was 141 of 202 cast with Bill Donald Gene Spilde and Norm Starr among the delegates.

Open House At KOA Draws Large Crowd In Grey Cliff Area

Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Faw hosted a KOA Kampground open house near Grey Cliff inviting the public to tour their updated facilities. Door prizes went to Norris Langston Larry J. Green Albert Rostad. Youth contests honored winners in fishing and pony rides with numerous local children named as winners.

Rodeo Queen Contestants Entertained At Tea

Louise Eschenko Marian Whidden Una Rae Raisland Carman Ellison Sharon Tollefson competed for the Rodeo Queen title in a tea hosted by Mrs. William Carroccia. Judges Mrs. Dean Lowry Mrs. Harold Rue and Mrs. Kermit Anderson evaluated poise and personality as contestants met the judging panel. The event is sponsored annually by the Big Timber Jayceens.

Boat Club Elects Big Timber in Opening Outing

The Glassrom Lakes outing drew eight to nine boats as eight families assisted with docks and safety sign under retiring commodore Archie Little. Tom Morgan was elected commodore along with Norm Starr as vice commodore Mrs. Howard Hanson secretary treasurer and Ray Bieber director. The pot luck meal and perch fishing were highlights of the early boating season.

Car Careens Through Fence Near Eaton’s Inn

Kathleen Viena Moran of Columbus drove a 1964 Mercury Comet off the right side of U S 10 at 10 p m Sunday swerving to avoid a deer. The car struck a fence at Ellis Faw’s property and suffered minor damage per Patrolman Murdock.

Miss Nina Adams, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Adams, arrived by plane yesterday morning at Billing's airport where she was met by her parents. A Carleton College graduate, she has worked in Evanston this year and is to be wed in June.

Death Summons Mrs Warretta A Strickland

Mrs Warretta A Strickland 86 died after a prolonged illness. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm from Lowry Funeral Home with burial in the family plot. Born October 11 1882 in Brooklyn she married Albert W Strickland in 1905. The couple lived in several states before retiring in Lig Timber.

Three Sweet Grass Students Win Honors at MSU Assembly

Three Sweet Grass students received scholarships at Montana State University honors and awards assembly. John Ellison earned the Montana Stockgrowers Association scholarship, Richard Jarrett the Peavey Company Agribusiness Scholarship, and Ole Oiestad the Ruth and Vernon Taylor Foundation Scholarship.

Local Notes and Folks Highlight Community Events

Mrs. Bertel Idland attended graduation exercises for grandson Loren Randall who was valedictorian and won a Montana State University scholarship. She also visited grandson Sp4 Wayne Guptill and family in Fromberg before he heads to Fort Lewis for Vietnam duty. Her Fromberg visit celebrated Wally Guptill’s valedictorian graduation and scholarship to Eastern Montana College. The Grey Cliff KOA Kampgrounds hosted the Grey Cliff school picnic with games and swimming. Joline Larson visited her hospitalized mother Marie Larson in Billings with Howard Hanson and Kenneth O'Dell. Mrs. Paul Stone and son Einar plan a summer trip to Norway, returning in August for school. Red Olson remains in Fort Harrison Veterans Hospital, improving gradually.

Requiem Mass Held for Miss Helen Formos

Miss Helen Formos 50 longtime Western Montana College faculty member died Saturday in San Jose California. Burial was in Mount Olivet Helena. She is survived by her mother Mrs Mary Formos Great Falls. Formos taught English at the local high school in 1941 42 and later served during the war years. She earned bachelor and master degrees from the University of Montana.

Son of Paul and Mrs Westervelt Killed in Vietnam

The Navy confirms U S N B846133 Johnnie Bowen Westervelt was killed in action on 21 May 1969 near Chau Do Vietnam while aboard a boat hit by a rocket. Funeral plans are pending with services possibly June 2 or 3 at the High School Gym conducted by Rev. Oece Johnson and a committal atop a local ranch hill.
