The piece critiques state and forest service handling of deer and antelope during a severe winter, noting mass die offs, hay losses, and ranchers feeding survivors. It questions organizers' lack of “hay lifts” and highlights costly winter counts, transplant efforts, and the looming return of hunters in their $3000 vehicles next fall.
The Bridge school scored 65 points to win the rural schools track meet held last Saturday afternoon at the local athletic field. High scorers were Franklin Grosfield and Bjarne Mosness from Bridge school with 15 points each, and Joseph Mahlum with 13 points. Bridge claimed nine firsts and five seconds, led by winners in multiple events, while many other schools and teachers participated.
An inspection by Victor Tromuds and Charles Lowe found 67 dead deer and fawns in a two mile lower Thompson hills stretch between the Victor and Adolph Tronrud ranches. Other dead deer and antelope were reported nearby as survivors weakened.
Memorial Day ceremonies in Mountain View include unveiling a granite monument in the cemetery by the American Legion post. A parade forms at the courthouse at ten, proceeding to the Legion building and cemetery, with honors for soldiers, sailors, and marines and flowers tossed at Yellowstone bridge.
Rural schools interscholastic results list first through fourth place finishers by grade in oral spelling. Names and places include Raymond Ross Hoem Lower Grey Cliff Rita Hanson Lower Melville and others across Basin Duck Creek Wild Rose and Upper Grey Cliff.
Averil Goosey and Larry Rule won first place in the Vaughn Ragsdale feather guessing contest. Sharon McKenzie and Charles Osborne tied for second. With 111 feathers total Averil was one off guessing 112 while Larry predicted 113 Sharon 109 and Charles 106. Winners must report Saturday at 2 p.m. at Vaughn Ragsdale store to claim prizes.
Big Timber plans a summer recreation program with High School Coach Roy Snyder supervising city park activities starting June 1. The JayCees sponsor a marble tourney won by sixth grader Michael Parenteau and aim to finish the swimming pool by summer.
Jimmy Schmidt four year old son of Mr and Mrs D V Schmidt died en route to Great Falls after slipping on the sidewalk at home and later suffering a brain hemorrhage. He was born March 20 1946 in Bowman North Carolina and had lived in Big Timber since. Survived by parents three brothers Jarold Lavern and Stanley three sisters Jewayne and three half brothers William Robert and John Flace. Funeral Tuesday at Big Timber Lutheran Church.
The Sweet Grass Racing association will hold a July 29 race meet at the rodeo grounds with a doubled purse from last year and a starting gate.Events include 220, 330, 440 yard races each with $10 entry and $100 purse, plus several longer races and relays all with $10 entries and $100 purses. An additional five-eighths and quarter mile race for Sweet Grass horses offers $150 purses.
County Agent F B Peterson asks wool producers who have not yet received their down payment checks for the 1950 wool clip to call at the county agent's office to pick up the payments.
