Big Timber plans a new night time look with mercury vapor lamps replacing all residential lights and 29 additional installations in outlying areas. Mayor Klindt cites improved appearance for night travelers when the highway arrives. Under Montana Power Co. contract annual lighting costs rise to 4065.60, about 1831.08 more, but the city expects roughly 2 1/2 times more light.
Chariot racing returns as a feature at the Big Timber Ropin n Ridin club event at the fairgrounds Sunday starting 1 p m. Other events include saddle horse, quarter mile, half mile and mile races, team and calf roping, barrel racing and a rescue race. $100 in silver dollars drawn for during the afternoon. Beer and pop available. Admission 1.00 adults 50 cents children over nine.
Reverend Grady Chaney leads a church concert featuring the SGHS band in a community event. The program includes gospel selections and student solos, drawing families and local residents to the high school gym.
The 1908 VeeRac fire engine, restored by the Jaycees, runs on gas and oil mix with a top speed of 12 mph. It will boost Jaycee rodeo ads and city parades, has seen action in the bond election, and now seeks old department uniforms for display and loan. Art Sell piloted the showcase vehicle and restoration totaled about 850 hours and 92 dollars to date.
A Montana State College study by Dolphus Dawson shows beef imports reduced Montana cattle producers’ income by $1.9 million in 1963, with total statewide economic loss of $3.8 million. The report suggests continued income declines into 1964 and details price effects on feeder cattle versus slaughter cows.
Big Timber residents approved the water improvement bond in a special election. Turnout topped 50 percent with 394 of 757 eligible voters casting ballots. Final tally 381 in favor to 13 opposed, with ward 1 228 for and 8 against, ward 2 153 for and 5 against.
Montana rancher Leo Cremer Jr introduces a night driving safety device tested by the State Highway Patrol. A slim plastic pole with a beehive shaped red glow mounts to a headlight, designed to keep the driver’s gaze on the road. The governor agreed to test it on highways after a city trial.
Big Timber Pioneer outlines the 1885 builder William Chessman house later Montana’s first official governor’s mansion. Chessman, born 1830 in Massachusetts, built wealth in water rights and mining, owning the Ten Mile Creek system. architect Cass Gilbert designed the mansion in 1884 with Gilbert supervising day labor.
Elizabeth Anderson attends a class with Rev. W. F. Clingman present. Kevin Halverson joins a class led by Jan Camp and Mrs. Harry Croft. Musetta's Waltz appears as a program item amid items marking community activities.
John E Tenge president of Midland National Bank of Billings will speak at SGHS commencement next Tuesday evening. He is past president of the Montana Chamber of Commerce and serves on multiple boards including Endowment and Research Foundation Montana State College and St. Vincent's hospital advisory board. He began in banking in Minnesota and rose to president of Midland National Bank in 1952.
Bozeman George Algard and Dixie Warp, Sweet Grass county high school graduates, were initiated into MSC’s biology honorary Phi Sigma on campus last week. Warp, a sophomore bacteriology major and former Alpha Lambda Delta treasurer, also joins Mu Beta Beta and serves in 4-H and drama groups. her parents are Arnold and Patricia Warp of Big Timber. Algard, Concordia College alumnus, is pursuing a master’s at MSC with a teaching assistantship in zoology. he is the son of Arthur and the late Mrs. Algard of Big Timber.
The Lions club will tear down the swinging bridge at Natural Bridge after a recent fire damaged the footwalk and cables. Gil Aller agreed to remove the structure for salvage as the damaged oil left the cables prone to rust and unusable.
Tope Strobel announces Centennial themed parade prizes for floats with three awards in the general division and separate 4H judging. Prizes are 50, 35, and 25 dollars based on originality quality and appearance. The theme aims to evoke western history from 75 to 100 years ago.
The Sweet Grass County High School 1964 class of 55 will receive diplomas at the 59th Commencement in the school gym at 8 p.m. on Tuesday May 26. Rev Grady Chaney gives the invocation and benediction. John E. Tenge of Midland National Bank will deliver the commencement address. Principal Ray Collins and Lloyd Rein preside over diploma presentations.
Mr and Mrs Paul Stone announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Oddlaug Jorunn to Donald C Anderson son of Mr and Mrs Leif Anderson of Melville. The wedding will be June 27 at the Big Timber Lutheran church.
The twelfth annual Honor Night will be held in the high school gym at 8 p m on Monday May 25. Recognition will be given to all students receiving activity awards and outstanding class work along with other special awards and scholarships. The public is invited.
John Schiltz departed Friday for Fort Shaw to take employment with the Zook Construction Co. His family will stay home until after the school year ends.
