Frannie Strobel calls for immediate action in Big Timber to organize a Montana Centennial year celebration. She warns that waiting and lack of leadership hurt local business, tourism, and community morale and urges city leaders and residents to form a coordinating effort.
Mollie Lucille Sparrow Armstrong 66 died at Community hospital last Wednesday evening after a long cancer illness. A Big Timber resident 40 years, she taught in local schools since 1923 and later rural and kindergarten classes. She was married to Dick Armstrong in 1925. Survivors include her husband, son Jack Armstrong of Great Falls, and a grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church with Rev. Ben Knapp officiating. interment followed at Mountain View.
The Big Timber Jaycees sponsor a queen contest to select a community queen for rodeo festivities. Voting costs 10 cents per vote and can be cast repeatedly. Jars for voting will be placed in stores after May 18, with details and a entry blank in this issue. a United States Savings Bond will be awarded to the queen.
Lions club members worked through a light rain to begin an information booth on highway 10 across from the Moose hall. Log slabs will be added for an old west look this Centennial year. Three girls Mary Clark Kristi Davis and Margaret Voges were chosen to staff the booth this summer. They will train by touring county points of interest and Memorial Day marks the opening.
The Melville Ladies Aid hosted about seventy seniors and guests Monday afternoon at the Dugout with a Centennial themed program. Mrs. Howard Hanson welcomed attendees and read The Homestead while Mrs. Kermit Anderson led the activities and three readings were given by Mrs. Neil Bolt. The Melville Meadowlarks presented verses and songs about the cattle industry in Montana as Centennial dresses adorned the singers.
A six member committee chaired by Fred Swift was chosen at the first meeting to study additional stockyards facilities. Members include Tope Strobel Arvid Larson John Yost John Ronneberg and Bob Racicot. They recommended a minimum one acre yard with a 15 ton scale and ticketed beam and plan to gauge public support via a countywide questionnaire.
Mothers and daughters were honored Wednesday evening at a banquet prepared and served by the men of the EUB church.
ICYE student Klaus Greiner spoke to the Big Timber Jayceens at Mrs. Jim Long’s home with Mrs. Joe Helle as co host. Members announced standing committees for the year and a Park County Jayceens extension installation tea set for May 16 in Livingston with Mrs. Jim Graham presiding.
About fifteen Boudier area ranchers held a meeting to address leafy spurge on adjoining lands. County Agent Bob Racicot urged group action and Forest Ranger Joe Helle outlined district efforts, with plans for spring foliar spraying using 2 4-D likely by late May and a public demonstration Monday afternoon at 1 30.
Five members of the Herder track team will compete in the Southern Division Class B meet in the western end of the division, with Columbus winning the meet 78 points. Harkowton 67 Red Lodge 33 Big Timber 30 Absarokee 7. Jack Panther led Big Timber with wins in the 100 and 440, placed second in the 220, and was second high point for the meet. Ben Taylor earned points in hurdles, Tom Bigton finished fourth in the mile, Jack Simmons qualified in the mile. All five will represent Big Timber in the divisional meet next week.
At the state music festival in Billings 38 students performed over two days after a Big Timber concert. Four band ensembles and four piano solos advanced from the district festival with ratings including superior and excellent. Ten named soloists and ensembles are listed with their scores, and 21 additional students took part in all state groups.
The speaker notes rodeo time is near with four weeks left and urges parade fund solicitation after May 25. Tope Strobe hints parade routing may shift to avoid traffic disruption and asks for more floats and entries from organizations.
Cecil J. Carl, Sweet Grass county agricultural stabilization chairman, warns farmers to measure wheat within allotments for price support. Unregistered farmers must request ASCS to measure at county office or via a future postcard. participation in diversion program triggers measurement at no cost to the producer.
The Melvilles from Miles City hosted Speed last week and Melville returned yesterday.
Dr. Herbert Clifford Roquet 70 died Thursday morning of a heart attack. A Montana veterinarian long active in the field, he lived in Big Timber since 1927 after earlier service in World War I and varied work including a cafe bakery. He married Eva Mjelde in 1918 and is survived by his widow, a daughter Gordon Cuniff, two grandchildren, a sister and brother in Indianapolis, and a brother in Florida. Burial will be at Mountain View after services Saturday at 2 PM at Lowry Chapel.
Grade school track meet results list shows event winners in sixth to eighth grade relay races, high jump, baseball throws, dash races, shot put, sack races and long jump with names such as Trace E Fal lang, Rick Schuler, Wayne Myr stol, Mick Breck and Deegan. Notable marks include fifth grade high jump 3 feet 5 inches and fifth grade girls 40 yard dash 7.5 seconds.
Sweet Grass county families have begun inviting inner city children ages six to eleven to spend 12 days in local Christian homes this July. The Chicago Missionary Society will supply diverse children for worship, recreation, and community activities at a cost of about 15 dollars per child, plus maintenance and entertainment. The First Congregational church sponsors the project and Rev. Ben Knopp can provide details.
A retirement party honored Mrs. Bess Mysse for 41 years of teaching at Kent Lake Reed Point Bridger Creek and Columbus schools. Attendees included out of town guests from Absarokee Big Timber Columbus Billings and Livingston with tributes from Supt B Z Burton and PTA president Mrs John Ott. The event featured student performances, gifts, a three tier cake, and a pink flower decorated table.
The City of Big Timber schedules a special bond election Friday May 15 from 12 noon to 8 pm. Voters decide on issuing water revenue bonds totaling 25 000 dollars. Ward 1 residents cast ballots at the Fire Hall and Ward 2 at the county courthouse.
The Order of Eastern Star met Tuesday night with Mrs. Dan Laubach and Dan Laubach presiding. Officers named include Flora Storey as worthy matron Byron Manley as worthy patron and Sidney Camno as associate matron. Also listed were Arence Erickson secretary and CAE Smart treasurer with Patsgrand Hepner named grand matron for Great Falls.
Governor Tim Babcock was the featured speaker at a Republican meeting at the Legion hall Saturday. He highlighted truth and facts, praised Rep. Jim Battin, noted the governors conference against beef quotas, and discussed silver dollar minting with Sen. Mansfield as hero. He arrived by plane on a tight schedule with campaign manager Orvin Flare absent.
Joseph J. Hoiland 40 of Big Timber died Friday morning at his trailer home after a short illness. He had worked 26 years as a heavy equipment operator for multiple Montana construction firms. Surviving relatives include a brother Arthur Hollton of Lakeside and several sisters located in Bartlesville, Spokane, and Great Falls. Funeral services were held Monday at Lowry Chapel with Rev. Ocee Johnson officiating. Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery.
Masons and their wives from across Montana gather May 23–24 in Virginia City for the 100th anniversary of Montana Territory’s first Masonic lodge Virginia City Lodge No 1. Grand officers from Montana and Kansas attend. Events include a Centennial ball and special entertainments for ladies.
