Ron Nord to Speak at SGHS Commencement Ceremony
Ron Nord of the University of Montana will deliver the commencement address for the Sweet Grass County High School Class of 1971. Nord, a 1951 UW graduate, coached at Oshkosh High for nine years and UW for three before moving to Montana where he has served nine years at the University of Montana in Missoula as head basketball coach, assistant football coach, and golf coach. Commencement is next Tuesday, May 25 at 8 p.m. in the high school gym.

Musical notes highlight busy student concert season
Grade and High School music departments held a string of events led by MSU Chamber Choir and Montanans. Pam Starr earned an excellent oboe rating at Bozeman rehearsals. All state Band Chorus and Orchestra impressed crowds at MSU Fieldhouse with a standing ovation. The May 11 Spring Band concert featured seniors and new immersive lighting. Soroptimist Music Festival in Livingston May 15 showcased eight superior ratings with many solos and ensembles.

Grey Cliff school pupils toured Red Lodge visiting the zoo where the monkey colony thrilled the children. They then ate lunch at Natalus and continued to Columbus to tour the TimberWeld plant before returning home. Twenty five students accompanied by several teachers and chaperones completed the outing.

SGHS Tracksters Earn Third in District Meet
Sweet Grass County High School placed third at the eight school district meet in Billings, led by Gust with two firsts in 100 and 220 yard dashes. Becken and Standish posted top times in distance events, while the 880 relay team qualified for divisional. Stewardship Week Observance Includes Tours and Picnic
Sunday observance of Stewardship Week drew about sixty people visiting Bill Lowes bird farm on Bridger Creek and Irving Pollard’s ranch to view a new 80 acre irrigation pump project. The 1600 gallon per minute system runs on 40 HP electric power and cost about 12000 dollars. Tourists then viewed Interstate operations and prairie dogs near Grey Cliff before KOA Kampgrounds and a return to the First Congregational church for coffee and refreshments.

Rural Track Meet May 7 Highlights Rapstad Bridge Wins

Sloan Arraigned Pleads Not Guilty in Murder Case
Richard Arne Sloan, 30, appeared in District Court on May 13 and entered a Not Guilty plea to first degree murder in the March slaying of his wife Connie Jo, 22. The defense sought a continuance to prepare, and the trial date was postponed to early September with a speedy-trial waiver. Sloan had been undergoing psychiatric evaluation at Warm Springs State Hospital. He was remanded to Sheriff Ken Thompson.
