Big Timber residents express frustration with Northern Pacific service. Mail bags broken and mail lost, photos delayed, and only one train per direction daily. Call for switching mail to buses to ensure reliable delivery amid high rates. Lions Club notes potential insurance losses from mail delays.
A man wearing a uniform reading Church of God circulated in the business district Tuesday as a charity solicitor. Rev. J G Sealey called him an imposter and warned the Church of vood does not solicit funds outside its membership. The suspect fled town before authorities could catch him. residents urged caution and sheriff's office said it will investigate.
The Sweet Grass County Farm Bureau plans its regular meeting Thursday May 26 at 8 p.m. in the Legion hall. After the business session two films on agricultural problems will be shown followed by square dancing led by caller Wallace Schallock. Members should bring cake or sandwiches to be served with coffee. Kenneth Flare and Miss Donna Moline will be honored at this meeting.
Virgil Gust travels to Minneapolis this week on a buying trip for the Robbins and Gust Department store.
Memorial poppy poster contest winners are announced for Big Timber Public School and rural schools. Winners include Richard Hager and Roger Christ for top placements, with multiple students receiving honorable mention. Contest is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
Five local churches agree to conduct a survey in Big Timber on May 27 and 28 to record family names household members and local church interest. Each congregation Evangelical United Brethren Lutheran Church of God St Marks Episcopal and Congregational will cover blocks proportionate to membership and aim to respect denominational lines while reaching unchurchered families. The effort seeks to clarify resident church affiliation or lack thereof and decide local participation.
The Grandman High School commencement on May 24 features the band, choir and an address by Principal John M. Fisher. Diplomas will be presented by Dr. B. Olness with Rev. E. Brentwood Barker and the Phantom Regiment processional concluding the ceremony. Honor students named include Bernard Berg, Elore Huyser, Lyle Fallang, and Kay Boe among others.
The program lists a May 22 baccalaureate at 8 p.m. in the high school gym with processional Now Let Every Tongue Adore Thee performed by the Bach High School Chorus, invocation Rejoice O My Soul by Rev. J. G. Sealey, and selections Schumann Handel Sullivan-Wilson featuring Rev. William A. Hood.
The program features salutatory by Maurine Hager and addresses by Benison, with presentations including the Class Key accepted by Erin Goosey and diplomas conferred by Supt. A. C. McDonald. Students Sharon Palm and Patricia Peterson participate in class history and poem readings, followed by the recessional and benediction.
The second annual awards assembly will be held in the high school gym Monday at eight. Awards will cover participation in athletics music and Montana State college high school week with special honors for four year scholastic achievement and all A averages. Babe Ruth award and FFA FHA awards will be announced along with Betty Crocker Homemaker Gene Ross Memorial and other honors. Civic groups may donate awards by notifying the principal before 4 pm Monday.
Mrs Johnnie Lee of Columbus was admitted to the Community hospital Sunday for medical care. Mrs C J Elgas is also a patient at the Community hospital and was admitted Tuesday.
The public is invited to hear Rep. Orvin Flare speak at Frye's cafe on Tuesday evening May 24 at 6 o'clock. Reservations for the dinner meeting cost 1.25 and may be made to Frye's by Monday. A loudspeaker will let attendees in the dining room hear him. Over 100 can be served in the banquet rooms. Flare will be in Big Timber that day for a high school commencement address and requested the meeting to discuss federal business with Sweet Grass county residents. The Lions club meets at the same time but does not interfere with the event.
Dr. James Ashton Barbour aged 56 died at St Patrick s Hospital in Missoula after an abdominal operation. Funeral services were held in Big Timber with Lowry Funeral Home and Rev. Wallace Bristol officiating. He is survived by a twin brother four sisters and several nieces and nephews. He will be cremated in Great Falls after services.
Neighbors and friends gathered at the Cherry Creek school house Saturday night to honor Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Blair on their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. The event featured a musical program by Mrs. Donald Blair and Arnold Berg and readings by Mrs. Ed Braaten.
Ben Berg former FFA president was named the outstanding FFA farmer for the Big Timber chapter at the regular meeting. His name will be placed on a plaque in the high school office. Benny Green presided and Terry Gallentine reported on the state delegate session in Bozeman. A summer meeting schedule was set for monthly sessions on the second Tuesday.
Pete Johnson of Grey Cliff celebrated his 88th birthday hosted by Ervin Overfelt and F. C. Alexander at Erv's Tavern last Thursday evening. Guests from Big Timber Reed Point Grey Cliff and Chico danced until midnight and enjoyed lunch. A native of Denmark Johnson has been a Montanan for 55 years born May 12 1867 he came to the U S at 19 and moved to Miles City in 1900. He later homesteaded 60 miles north and worked as a sheepherder before settling in Sweet Grass county in 1926. He retired three years ago and now lives in Grey Cliff.
Shelly Van Cleve of Settlement school won first in the seventh and eighth grade oral spelling contest at the rural scholastic meet. Carol Rein of Basin was second, Perry Anderson Settlement third, Nyla Upland Knob Hill fourth. Faith Brennan Grey Cliff led the eighth grade vocabulary test, with Monte Jarrett Bridge, Carol Rein, and Shelly Van Cleve tied for second, Nyla Upland third, Florence Yost Melville fourth. Settlement school and Basin school tied with 35 points each in the Loving Cup competition.
Congressman Orvin Flare travels from Big Timber to Missoula to Billings in a broad Montana schedule. He delivers commencement remarks at Busby and Thompson Falls high schools and speaks at Har din, Great Falls, Butte, Ryegate, and Billings events while planning civic meetings and a state livestock convention. He also appears on TV before departing for Minneapolis and Washington, DC.
Joan Clark daughter of Mr and Mrs McLean Clark had her tonsils removed at the Community Hospital on Saturday. She was dismissed the next day.
