Mrs. G W Hoofnagle notes her 45 years of Pioneer subscriptions and recalls snow and freezing weather in the old hometown. She celebrates Sweet Iass county support for the Bloodmobile, mentions nursing work, and asks about polio shots.
A western parade will open the Big Timber rodeo on June 12 led by the Big Timber Jaycees. The rodeo includes bareback and saddle bronc, bulldogging, calf roping, bull riding, and girls barrel racing with $1000 in purses. Trail's End, 1959 world champ saddle bronc, owned by Oral Zumwalt, will be featured.
Absarokee Junior Chamber of Commerce became Montana’s thirty third Jaycee chapter on April 23 in Absarokee with a charter night. State President Ted Hazelbaker of Dillon presented the charter to Absarokee President Tom Flanagan. The event featured crowd from Absarokee Columbus Big Timber Dillon Butte Billings Bozeman and their spouses plus a post program dance.
About 1614 residents are registered to vote in Sweet Grass County according to Clerk and Recorder Dick Armstrong. The number is around the county average for registered voters.

The community was shocked by the sudden death of Stuart H. Nicholson. He was at Nicholson Market in the morning and felt hip and chest pain in the afternoon. He died after arriving at Community Hospital around 3 o'clock from embolism. funeral arrangements had not been made at press time.
Charles Land Nottingham aged four months, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Nottingham, died in a San Francisco hospital after a month’s confinement. He was born December 18, 1959, in Big Timber. Funeral services were held at the Big Timber Lutheran church with Rev. Ocee Johnson officiating. Interment was in Mountain View. The family plans a brief stay in Big Timber before Mr. Nottingham returns to duties with the Army at Fort Ord, California.
Rep Sumner Gerard denounces federal cost practices and small down payments used by government programs as he campaigns for the U S Senate. He cites TVA as an example of rising costs and criticizes liberal spending while defending installment lending but urges scrutiny of federal programs.
Friday morning May 6 at 10 a m students perform a play day at the high school gym. At 1 p m a track meet unfolds at the fairgrounds with a Alaska and Hawaii theme featuring songs dances and portraits. Public invited includes Grey Cliff West White Beaver Kent Sour Dough and Lower Dry Fork plus several districts.
Plans for the second annual Girl Scout carnival are underway for Saturday May 14 in the high school hot lunch room. The event runs 1 p m to midnight with games and 5000 prizes plus balloons confetti and treats. Local firms donate prizes and a large committee of volunteers organizes games concessions and the ticket booth.
The city bowling tournament resumes with doubles and singles finishing at City Club Lanes this weekend. Team play concluded with Farmers Service first at 3145. other top scores include City Club Lanes 3124 and Ray's Service 3044. Prizes awarded for top four placements.
The Big Timber Jaycees host their annual inaugural ball this Saturday at the Legion hall with a pot luck dinner and dance. The event honors outgoing and incoming officers of both Jaycee and Jayceen chapters and will feature officer pin presentations to the new officers.
The slate includes State senator A Ronald McDonnell as Republican incumbent and Claude C Gray as Democrat. State representative candidates Gene Spilde Republican and Everett W Charlson Democrat. County commissioner Edwin D Webber incumbent and Roy Mahlum Republican plus Wright Ewan Democrat. Clerk Victoria Braaten Republican. County attorney O J Paulson Republican incumbent. Sixth judicial district judge George J Allen incumbent and Earl C Ammerman. Justice of the peace incumbents Lyman P Moulden and C A Bishop unopposed. Filing declined occurred last Thursday.
The Pioneer notes a pitch to make Livingston a national spotlight as promoter Norman Rothschild touted Fullmer Giardello training here. Jimmy Cannon of the Miami Herald wrote about Livingston, while local editor Bob Miller vents on big town feature writers.

Impassable roads force postponement of the Glenn McBride auction sale to Tuesday May 10. The McBride ranch twelve miles north of Big Timber has sold to William J Vogel of Winnett. The sale includes 250 sheep five cattle five horses farm machinery and miscellaneous items set for 10 am with a free noon meal.
Senator Murray announces withdrawal from the Democratic ticket removing his renomination petition after family urging. He says his 25 years in the senate justifies stepping aside and pledges private support for Montana resource conservation and industrial development. He thanks supporters and notes he was elected five times.
Albert Morris Stubblefield, a former local resident and retired automobile salesman, died April 28 at his Aberdeen Washington home after a brief illness. Born in Bozeman, he moved to Big Timber as a child and lived there many years before relocating to Aberdeen in 1922 to work in an auto sales agency. he had been retired 11 years. Christian Science services were read Saturday at Elerding Chapel, with concluding rites at Fern Hill cemetery.
Rev and Mrs Ocee Johnson returned from the historic meeting where three Lutheran synods voted to form the American Lutheran church. Dr F A Schiotz was elected president with Dr N A Menter as vice president and Dr William Larsen as secretary. The union joins 2 2 million baptized members in 5 000 congregations in the U S and Canada. The Rocky Mountain district will organize at Great Falls May 25-26 with Rev Johnson and Hubert Becken representing local Lutherans.
The Big Timber Woman's club held a musical program Monday night for National Music Week. Mrs. Robert Woolley led arrangements with participants from his music department and Mrs. C. V. O'Leary's piano pupils. Performers included a clarinet trio, several soloists, and piano numbers led by Mary Ellen McDonnell and Nina Adams.
Dale Schott, son of Grey Cliff residents, has leased the Perrine barber shop in Big Timber. The Perrine business, founded by Stephen E. Perrine before 1900, passed to Hal Perrine's son and closed after Hal's death three weeks ago. The new operator, a barber college graduate, trained in Bozeman and Billings.
Incumbent Judge George J. Allen and Earl C. Ammerman have filed for the non partisans nomination for judge of the sixth judicial district which includes Sweet Grass and Park counties. Allen won the contest four years ago.
The T-Bone Cow-Belles held a Columbus meeting to form committees and plan for the year. Officers include President Mrs. Dick Shaw and Secretary-Treasurer Mrs. Les Thompson. numerous members from Absarokee Melville Reed Point Luther and other towns were named to program, public relations, fundraising, and beef education committees. Members may join viaLes Thompson in Absarokee. annual dues are $3 covering local state and national Cow-Belles dues.
The Montana session of the Academy of Friendship of the Women of the Moose met in Harlowton with 13 chapters attending. A noon luncheon preceded a ritual session conferring the Academy of Friendship degree on 62 candidates led by Mrs. Josephine Cox, with instruction from Mrs. Edna Hinman.
Erland P. Nelson 49 died Friday at St. John's hospital Helena after a long cancer illness. Funeral at Congregational church with Rev. Helmuth Fichtler. pallbearers listed. Interment Mountain View. Audrey Douthett Nelson, born 1911 Big Timber, married 1937 Nelson. Survived by husband, son Steve, daughters Kathleen and Cindy, siblings and in laws. business links to Big Timber lumber past.
The Jaycee sponsored state horseshoe pitching tournament will be held in Big Timber on June 18 with a possible second day. City park pits will be built to AAU specifications, Frank Biglen drafts blue prints, Walt Dutton handles metal work, and Jim Graham leads publicity. Registration and prizes are managed by Jim Long and Jim Schneider, with Dean Lowry and Ed Holmberg in charge of officiating under AAU rules.
Sweet Grass County High School juniors hosted the junior senior prom Saturday night in the gym. The Tronrud Orchestra played as gay streamers framed the dance area and decorated booths lined the floor. A large stage painting by Mrs. Svend Maitland echoed the theme, while punch was served by Mary Ellen McDonnell Mardi Hart Paula Nyre and Nina Adams. The grand march featured Joan Lomeland with escort John Hooper followed by Bill McLauchlah and Odd Lang-Stone. Class sponsors were Arthur L Schump and Stephen Ollestad. Chaperons included Mr and Mrs Lloyd Rein Dr and Mrs John Herries Mr and Mrs Clyde Davis and Mr and Mrs Edwin Holmberg.
The Big Timber self service laundry at The Park Motel will have its official opening Friday and Saturday. Free pop balloons coffee and doughnuts will be served to visitors. Clem Stirns the proprietor will offer free washing and drying on those days.
