Supreme Court backs Olsen in rate challenge cases
Helena Montana Supreme Court ruled Monday that Attorney General Arnold H Olsen may challenge the validity of higher telephone and natural gas rates. The unanimous opinions send two companion cases back to district court for trials on their merits. Olsen seeks to nullify Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co phone rate hikes and Montana Power Co gas rate increases approved in 1953, contending they deprive Montanans of millions annually. The state was ruled to have standing as a party in interest.

Mrs Cordelia Frances Braughton 82 died Tuesday at her daughter’s home of a heart attack. Funeral at Congr egational church Friday at 2 pm with Rev E Brentwood Barker officiating. Burial in Mountain View. Born December 9 1872 in Pine Hill Kentucky she married Robert F Braughton in 1887 and had 11 children. Survivors include three daughters and three sons, 21 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Memorial gifts to Mrs W K Amery.

Big Game License Fee Is Increased in Montana
Montana residents face a $3.00 big game license this year while antelope permits drop to no fee. non residents pay $100 for a license allowing a deer elk bear and goat and gain new game bird and antelope hunting rights with a $20 permit per species. The changes stem from the 34th legislative assembly and governor involved recodification actions plus added powers for the commission and penalties alignment.

Ed Hower was elected supervisor of the Ground Observer Corps to replace Alice Myrstol. Last Rites for Mrs Marie Larsen in Absarokee
Funeral services for 74 year old Mrs Marie Katherine Larsen were held at the Absarokee Lutheran church with Rev A O Radland presiding. Burial followed at Rosebud cemetery. She died after a long illness at her daughter’s home near Melville. She was born in Denmark March 22 1880 and later married Andrew Larsen in 1909. They homesteaded near Absarokee before moving to Wisconsin and back to the Stillwater area to retire. She is survived by her husband a son Edward Larsen a daughter Mrs Williams three granddaughters and a grandson.

Winter Storm Closes Roads Then Lets Them Open in Sweet Grass County
Sweet Grass County shook off a heavy winter storm as drifts of up to seven feet blocked roads in Gibson and surrounding areas. Supervisor Henry Elgen warned residents to stock up on groceries and feed. Crews opened roads toward Melville and to the Wheatland county line, with notable recoveries by Eurichs and Rasmus Roe after snowbound periods. Chinook winds began reducing the snow, and West Boulder traffic was restored to the Park County line.

Fire Destroys Malinoff Home
The ranch home of Mr and Mrs George Malinoff on lower Sweet Grass burned to the ground Wednesday morning. Firefighters arrived to find the structure fully involved and could only prevent spread. A few appliances were saved while the rest, including a deep freeze and cupboards, were destroyed. The fire likely started in the attic but the cause remains undetermined.

Montana State College extension livestock specialist E P Orcutt reports Montana led all states with an average wool price of 61 cents per pound in 1954, according to USDA Agricultural Marketing Service data. Texas and Nevada followed at 59 cents, California 58, Louisiana 56, with the U S average 53.9 cents.
