The legislature faces a possible extraordinary session as governors and lawmakers clash over tax bills and revenue measures. The Senate backs higher taxes including a 10 percent levy on gas and a state income tax, while the House opposes some increases and favors changes to land law and highway commission structure.
Funeral services for Mrs Theodore Rice were held at the Congregational church with Rev. C. G. Burnett delivering the sermon. The service featured selected scripture, hymns and a quartet, with interment in Mountain View cemetery and pallbearers named. Mrs Rice, born Lena Sherrill in 1886 near Des Moines, moved with her parents to Oregon then Big Timber, married Theodore E. Rice in 1886, and died at Moore Montana aged 52.
The Big Timber volunteer fire department held its annual masquerade ball on February 22 filling the auditorium to capacity. Prizes donated by the public went to many entrants with varied costumes while judges, including Jack Watt of Columbus and families of Livingston, selected the winners for both men and women.
The troop, led by Scout Master Aan f Cc Vendy and assistant Gordon McLean, works to advance troop activities and earn community cooperation as plans mature to buy equipment and strengthen youth programs.
The first Booster Dinner, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, drew 43 attendees in the Masonic banquet room. A. J. Turco chaired the evening as L. J. Douthett spoke on current business conditions, followed by songs by George Rhoades and talks by D. W. Higbie and B. Y. Willman on local telephony and the Boy Scout movement.
Sweet Grass County High School claimed first place at the Park County Invitational held in Livingston February 24 to 26, with Park County second, Columbus third, and Gallatin fourth. Sweet Grass defeated Columbus 16 17 in a pivotal semifinal, routed Livingston 43 14, and beat Gallatin 29 18 in the final game to stay undefeated.
Washington march 1 the Fordney emergency tariff bill was delivered to the White House tonight after being signed by Vice President Marshall and Speaker Gillett. The Chamber of Commerce board met in executive session appointing seven committees with chairmen to select two members each for three person panels.
In a committee of the whole session the Ravalli county representative challenged a 67040 appropriation for the attorney general’s office. The bill, a broad state department expense measure, drew further debate as lawmakers reviewed related laws and city projects. A report noted airfield and park improvements, funding for a women’s club project, and monthly board meetings as part of efforts to bolster state services and youth programs.
The Supreme Court ruled the farm loan act lawful and federal land banks authorized. It upheld Congress power to create the banks and exempt their bonds from state taxes, enabling immediate bond issues to finance approved loans. Justices McReynolds and Holmes dissented on jurisdiction, not the findings.
In Dowell Illinois five miles south town the Kathleen Mine shaft was sealed to extinguish flames after seven men were trapped. The body of George Early, third and last miner killed in an explosion at mine No 5 of Centr alia Coal Co, was recovered tonight.
New York announces the retirement of Charles E. Hughes from the firm Hughes Rounds Schurman and Dwight.
