Billings and Sweet Grass battled in a fast game with multiple lead changes. Parker and Whalen contributed for Billings while Nepstad and O'Donnell showcased key plays for Sweet Grass, ending with Billings 17 to 20. Referee Alquist of Bozeman officiated.
After a Friday night game Billings High fell 20 to 17 to Big Timber High. Big Timber led early and held on through a fast hard contest with a 11-7 first half and 9-10 second half scoring. Coach Glenn Bingham of Billings said there was no alibi and that they were simply best.
Reported delays ripple through the hast conference as talks on the Serres treaty and Greece Italy and the Turkish question continue. Lloyd George Briand plan a preliminary meet with Italian Foreign Minister Storan to review positions and wartime adjustments.
Peking reports most famine sufferers spared from starvation as grain reaches railroad points and transport agencies. Estimates of people affected range from 5,010,000 to 21,000,000 with spring considered crucial. International aid demands about 7 million more, with funds in sight totaling 870 million including 6 million from America.
Great Falls reports Frances Thorstenson was sentenced in federal court by Judge George M. Bourquin to 80 days in jail and fined $100 for using the mails to defraud. Evidence showed the defendant sent fraudulent checks through the mail to various parties to collect money.
In Butte on February 17, company president C F Kelley and other operators pressed unions to affiliate with the AFL and drop LW V influence as talks continued. Disputes over craft jurisdiction and working rules linger with a potential break or an amicable agreement. Conference recesses to February 28 as labor delegates review company demands.
Washington February 21 The senate will delay soldier bonus legislation until the extra session as Senator MecGumber prepares a detailed cost statement for the relief measures. Senator Penrose warns the rush may harm deserving features while awaiting army and navy data.
Topeka police and county officials continued the inquiry into the 20 year old Katherine Foley death from poison. Her dying statement claimed a man and woman forced poison down her throat. Chief of Police Leech called the case a complete mystery.
Field Manager E. B. Coolidge reports the Home stake No. 1 well on Cat Creek has an initial measured flow of 250 barrels. The report comes from Lewistown on February 19.
Sweet Grass County's basketball team defeated Gallatin High 35 to 23 in Bozeman at the Y gymnasium. The visitors led 18 to 6 at halftime before Gallatin trimmed the margin to 17–17 in the second half. Big Timber sent a large delegation to cheer, with lively passing and long-range shooting from the Gallatin players.
Relief parties dispatched from Anchorage to locate Dr. J. B. Beeson who left Iditarod 12 days ago. Beeson endured 11 days of blizzards on the Rainy Pass trail and two days without food in a race to reach the remote area to aid Claude Baker.
In Helena on February 19 the house moved to bill the marriage license issue this afternoon as the senate passed a bill related to honor system and state property. The session noted expenditures and adjustments affecting the capitol grounds amid ongoing debate on policy changes.
Washington Feb 18 The National Woman's party dissolves its political phase and births a new organization using the old name and colors. Leaders promise energy for the removal of regal disabilities of women while avoiding radical or militarist control. Debates centered on disarmament birth control and women’s election to Congress and state offices.
President-elect Harding has reached tentative decisions on his cabinet posts. Mellon would be Secretary of the Treasury and Weeks Secretary of War, with Daugherty as Attorney General and Hays as Postmaster General among others. Denby would lead the Navy, Fall the Interior, Wallace Agriculture, Hoover Commerce, and Davis Labor. Changes are unlikely in navy, commerce, or labor.
Charles Evans Hughes, former New York governor and U S Supreme Court justice, was formally designated by President-elect Harding as the next secretary of state. The appointment followed a long conference on foreign policy to be addressed after March 4.
A lone bandit held up the North Coast Limited mail car near Bailey’s Minnesota injuring postal clerks. C. C. Strong of Minneapolis was shot while resisting. Christianson and E. L. Brown aided. The loot totaled in the thousands with currency and negotiable bonds taken. Strong’s condition is serious and not expected to improve.
Local Troop No. 1 of Boy Scouts led by Scoutmaster F. Ef. Moody organized a Saturday hike to the Boulder River. About 9:30 a.m. the group departed from town and spent time at the campsite building fires and setting up tents before returning home that evening.
