Conventional Hall Philadelphia June 24 A torrent of nominating speeches and demonstrators carried the GOP convention into the early morning hours with the Dewey bandwagon riding high against rivals. Dewey No 1 followed by Taft Warren Stassen Vandenberg Baldwin and MacArthur. The 15 000 spectators roared as each nomination sparked long revelry and marching demonstrations.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary C. Maerdian 78 were held at the Episcopal church with Rev. Wallace Bristol officiating Lowry's handled arrangements She died in her sleep Friday night Born October 3 1869 in Belleville Ill came to Big Timber in 1888 taught at Settlement school Married Otto F Maerdian in 1896 at Adam ranch near Melville Moved to Polson 1910 and back to Big Timber 1939 later joined son Col Frank R Maerdian at West Point and returned to the city in 1943 Survived by son brother sister two grandchildren and five nieces and nephews One daughter Adele Lusk preceded in death in 1938.

Mr and Mrs Ed Braaten departed Tuesday night heading east. Mrs Braaten will visit her brother Arvid Wickland and family in Bismarck North Dakota. Ed Braaten will travel to Minneapolis to pick up a truck. They expect to return the first of the week.

Filing closed last Saturday with multiple candidates listed for state representative county commissioner county attorney clerk of court coroner justice of the peace and party committeemen and committeewomen across several towns.
Gov Thos E Dewey led the Republican national convention on the second ballot with 515 votes and 33 needed for a victory. Taft rose to 274, Stassen 149, Vandenberg 62, Warren 57, Baldwin 19, Martin 10, MacArthur 7, Reese 1 as anti Dewey forces sought adjournment to regroup before the next ballot.
Four lodges Bozeman Livingston Harlowton and Big Timber were represented at a Knights of Pythias district meeting held at Fraternity hall last night. Kalispell grand chancellor E B Foot was an official visitor. One candidate was initiated in the third degree. Several visitors from other lodges took part in the work with luncheon committee members listed from Livingston Bozeman and Harlowton.
Visitants include Mr and Mrs Ronald Johan of Spokane at Esp home as Mr Johan serves as super intendent at the crusher. William Cosgriff son of Mr and Mrs Martin Cosgriff of Grey Clift earned three blue ribbons in a track meet between Miles City and Glen dive schools this spring. Washington June 21. Here are questions and answers on the peacetime draft bill passed by Congress. The bill sets a two year draft of 606 882 men aged 19 to 25 for 21 months each. First call likely in September after a 90 day signing period. Registration opens after signing. exemptions include war veterans and ministers. Deferrals and avoidance options include joining reserves, National Guard, or college deferments.
A second flash flood in two weeks hit Sweet Grass Wednesday night into Thursday, creating five foot water surges that ruined hay and grain, washing out bridges, and stranding motorists. A severe hailstorm near Melville damaged grain, alfalfa, and homes, with livestock losses and debris washing across ranches. The Willson and Leitner bridges failed, roads blocked countywide except Boulder, and residents aid neighbors in rescues while officials assess damage.
Benjamin Nevin longtime Sweet Grass county resident died of a heart attack at White Sulphur Springs on Wednesday June 16 funeral services were held there with Rev H S Tool and burial followed in White Sulphur Springs He was born March 15 1870 near Big Timber and married Margaret La Plank in 1900 They lived on Fish creek homestead before moving to White Sulphur about 20 years ago He is survived by his widow a daughter Mrs John Gratz two brothers Tom Nevin and William Nevin two sisters Mary Counter and Mima Kinkle four grandchildren two great grandchildren and two daughters Sarah and Madeline preceded him in death.
Two federal hospital officials from the United States Public Health Service will tour Montana in July to meet hospital planners and assess facilities. The itinerary runs July 1 to 10, visiting Red Lodge Billings Roundup Harlowton Helena Great Falls Shelby Cut Bank Libby and more, with meetings in Helena for architects from Butte and Missoula.

Mrs Edward Osburn and son Tommy visited Mrs Roy Osburn then headed to Bonners Ferry Idaho after weeks with her parents in Columbus and other relatives.
President Truman designated eastern Montana as a disaster area after floods and cloud bursts. The federal works administrator Maj. Gen. Philip Fleming will supply surplus blankets, cots, tents, and other items to local governments upon request following appeals by Governor Sam C. Ford and Senator Murray.
Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Montie Riter included his brother in law and sister Mr. and Mrs Nick Ohlson en route from Pullman Washington to Miles City to make their home. Also visiting were Mr. and Mrs George Riter and Mr. and Mrs Elmer Nogelmeier traveling from Willow Lake and Grover. They plan to tour Yellowstone Park before returning home and collected a quart of wild berries on a Boulder trip near Whispering Pine.
