The Big Timber Montana newspaper reports a Sunday power cut affected portions of town for nearly four hours. The outage disrupted homes and businesses while crews worked to restore electricity. A separate note highlights Brownie Scouts planting two trees at the Dugout, with a photo on page 10.
Wet roads slow progress on the West Boulder Bridge approach project at McLeod as grading is complete but gravel and final surfacing await dry weather. Ron Hoyem of the Montana Department of Highways expects completion by late July or early August. Delays also affect a second local highway project east and west of town with seal mix delivery lagging. Guard rails installation planned for the Boulder River bridge at the town’s east end.
Big Timber Jaycees sponsor a two day Youth Rodeo at the Sweet Grass County Fairgrounds with shows at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Tickets available at the fairgrounds office. Secretary Buzz Finn says 159 contestants from Montana, Wyoming, and 30 from Sweet Grass County will compete in events sanctioned by the Montana Junior Rodeo Association.
Bids for the Cort Hotel demolition will be opened in Helena next week by the Department of Administration. Kembel said bid sheets are being sent to interested contractors and information is available from the state architect's office. The May 25 deadline passed without word from owners Round Mountain Estates Inn of Arkansas. demolition funding remains unsettled and may come from state funds later.
About 10 residents gathered for a two to three hour session led by the Big Timber Government Study Commission. The group discussed a broadly written charter to grant self-government powers while preserving state limits. Voters would decide on consolidation or elimination of city government. A four year term for council suggested, council size likely to grow, mayoral power could lessen, and incumbents would not raise salaries until term ends. The plan includes mandatory reviews of boards and departments to determine necessity.
Local scouts gathered at the Gary Cooper Ranch on the Missouri River between Helena and Great Falls for the Scoutennial program. Leaders Brad Snodgrass and Eugene Petersen and parent Dick Josephson participated along with scouts Mark Josephson John Josephson Joe Josephson Mike Little Pat Rue David Powell Bill Refsland Jim Burmeister Floyd Petersen Scott Ferguson Kevan Jacobs Ken Rostad and Dan Dempster through demonstrations and seminars.
A 14 year old Big Timber boy Perry Todd was listed in good condition at St. Vincent's Hospital Billings after a ranch accident at the Charlie Reid Ranch on West Boulder. He fell about 20 feet from a Farm Hand bucket and sustained head lacerations and three fractured vertebrae. Todd expects a week to 10 days in the hospital with possible back brace later. Visitors not advised yet. friends may write to room 416.
