In Sweet Grass County 13 residents attended last week’s county government study commission hearing about proposed governmental changes. The Pioneer notes a tight turnout as officials consider options.
A 21 year old Livingston man William E Sleeth II died from injuries after a one vehicle crash south of Big Timber late Sunday. The Ford pickup, driven by Sandra Brunckhorst 20, went out of control crossed the center line and overturned into a borrow pit. Sleeth was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital for spinal injuries. Coroner to convene seven member jury for inquest.
Mountainarts finishes a Big Timber walking tour brochure titled Big Timber A Place in History funded by the Sweet Grass County Bicentennial Committee. The guide lists 42 sites with a city map and notes, starts at 120 East Yellowstone Avenue, and aims at residents and visitors with extra copies for future distribution.
The City Council met to discuss routine business and the library board's choice to end its federation affiliation. Edna Goosey testified that staying in the federation would cost most of the library's book budget, so the board recommended declining continued membership.
A Sunday Bicentennial program in Big Timber features a joint worship service, patriotic speech, contests, and fireworks. Events run 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with food booths, calendars for sale, and support from local groups including the Sweet Grass Recreation Association and Woman's Club.
Visitors may bring picnics or buy food as registration for contests runs. The afternoon program starts at 1:30 p.m with Norm Starr as master of ceremonies. George Savchenko opens with the national anthem and Rev. Oliver Tanquary delivers the invocation. Bill Yaeger speaks, Kenneth Willson plays America the Beautiful, and Tanquary gives the benediction. Trophies are awarded at 2:30 p.m. for beard, oldest resident, and best ladies and child costumes, with judging by the CowBelles. Music follows from 3:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The Big Timber Pioneer will be sold to Dale and Beccy Oberly and Charles and Nancy Heckart, effective Thursday. Former editor Larry Lowary will relocate to California. Oberly, 31, long worked for Cheyenne Newspapers and held community leadership roles in Cheyenne Civitan Club and the Chamber of Commerce.
