Provost Marshal General Crowder nears final draft regulations for the draft as Wyoming awaits its report. Total registrants reach 9 611 811 with Wyoming promising returns within 24 hours. Crowder warns absentees bear the burden of proving draft status and notes the draft applies to the army only and cannot guarantee service in a chosen branch.
Mrs Mary McQuillan the aged mother of Mrs Alice McQuillan Dunn testified in Ramsey county district court about the April 26 morning murder of her daughter. She described a noise in the house and a man holding a gun as she approached the door during the trial of Frank J Dunn, charged with procuring the killings.
Washington reports over $35,000,000 subscribed in the first two days of the week long drive to raise $100,000,000 for war relief. A $10,000,000 pledge for tuberculosis efforts in France was made anonymously. Cincinnati Milwaukee Buffalo led with large German population cities contributing.
In Butte Montana on June 19 the Silver Bow trades and Labor council endorsed the electrical workers strike against Montana Power. The council did not back the Metal Mine Workers demands and formed a joint committee with Building Trades Metal Trades and Montana Federation of Labor to organize a miners union under AFL leadership. Mr Lord is expected to arrive this week.
Mayor Claiborn calls a meeting at the fire hall to organize Red Cross week from June 18 to 25. Sweet Grass county aims to raise 1000 dollars with county chairman C A Caulking and several captains named for street sides and local posts. Two committees of two ladies will be named to handle Friday and Saturday tasks.
London reports German casualty lists for May show 22 000 killed or died of wounds 26 562 prisoners or missing 62 394 wounded total 110 957 These figures, added to prior totals, bring the war’s German casualties to 1 089 127 killed and died 557 419 prisoners and missing 2 731 223 wounded a grand total of 4 356 760 since the war began.
In Mexico City a front page campaign by El Universal urges cutting relations with Germany. Prominent figures weigh action with supporters urging alliance with the United States and others advocating strict neutrality as debates unfold. General Rafael Cepeda backs break as a long overdue step. General Alvaro supports neutrality while Rafael Zubarán urges neutrality and ties with the United States.
The council heard a report from engineers on Big Timber Montana sewer work. Inspectors found ground pipes first class and on line. The report addresses freezing risk, backfill material, and confirms contractor Gust Nordquist is handling construction properly.
Sheriff Lyons was told a body had been taken from the Yellowstone river at Columbus. A search with Chris Magelssen showed the corpse was not Bert Crandall, who disappeared May 28. Differences in clothing height and ear scar confirmed the error.
Washington reports two ships of the Shipping Board fleet chartered to Russia for Archangel transport of part of 300000 tons of Russian supplies awaiting shipment in New York. The icebound Archangel port will reopen after October 1. The ships seized from the enemy fleet are about 9000 tons each and will carry agricultural harvesting machinery for grain crops ripening on the steppes.
Paris June 16 Major General Pershing begins organizing the arrival and deployment of American forces to command in Europe. He visits the new army headquarters at the Hotel des Invalides and meets General Petain at the French general headquarters.
Robert Linton vice president of North Butte company visited Helena to discuss compensation for the dependents of 164 miners who died in the Speculator mine disaster. He conferred with Chairman Spriggs of the state industrial accident board about plans to expedite payments and obtained an estimate of the cost.
Chairman Spriggs estimated the payout could reach about 600000, while Mr. Linton stated the company would pay whatever amount is required to compensate the dependents. The firm aims to settle promptly once leases are adjusted.
In Petrograd, June 15, M. Tereschtenko welcomed Elihu Root led mission as ambassador Francis outlined wartime cooperation. The Russian minister praised the U S Declaration of Independence and pledged to fight tyranny while pursuing internal democratic strength.
Charles Garnier Sr owner of the Trail Creek railway from the Maxey mines reads that the line was offered for use in France and may be sold with steel rails and equipment shipped overseas. Dudley Johnson of Lewistown and Garnier own the 13 mile line once run from Chestnut to the Maxey mines built in 1896. The Northern Pacific previously operated it at a loss before coal operators regained control and shut the road about two years ago.
Miles City reports a 54 cent per pound wool price paid to Kenneth McRae by J. G. Guthrie for Silverman & Sons of Chicago. The clip's size isn t disclosed but is believed large. Guthrie notes Montana wool sold for about 10 cents a pound a year ago.
Sweet Grass county schedules four picnics in Grey Cliff Gibson McLeod and Melville from June 25 to 28 under Montana defense council guidance. Speakers include Hon. B. C. White on America's war role and Miss Bess Rowe on food economy. County agent D S Fox will discuss farmers part in world food situation. Activities feature ball games pole raising dancing and a basket style meal with hot coffee.
Secretary McAdoo announced that no part of the Liberty Loan over subscriptions would be accepted and that the issue is limited to 2 000 000 000 dollars. Subscriptions will be pared down from large amounts to fit the limit, with over subscriptions unlikely to fall below seven million. Final totals at reserve banks will be known after Monday and the overall public demand likely to be clear by mid next week.
Thomas G. Blakeman and his wife arrived from the Crow reservation and bought several hundred Hinrich beef cattle. The herd will be sent to the Blakeman ranch near Melville for fattening and breeding. Mrs. Blakeman visited her mother, Mrs. Paul Ledyard Van Cleve of Melville, who is recovering from grip.
Big Timber lost electric power since Sunday as the Montana Power Co. line from the Chittenden to the Conrow ranch below Mission failed after water damage. Crews worked through the night and expected restoration today while Billings supplied daytime power but cut nights to meet own needs. Residents used lamns and candles. the town recalled Abe Lincoln’s era of tallow dips.
