A patriotic Fourth of July celebration is planned in Big Timber with field events at 10 a.m. on McLeod street, noon lunch, 1:30 p.m. speeches by County Agent Fox and others, a noted speaker delivering a patriotic address, a 4 p.m. game between Big Timber and Wilsall, and a Catholic church dance with lunch.
The first two patriotic picnics of a series were held June 25 at Grey Cliff and June 26 at Gibson, drawing about 200 and 175 attendees. County agent D. S. Fox spoke on the food situation and how he would help, while Mrs. F. S. Cooley urged curtailing waste and demonstrated the cold pack canning method. Hon. B. C. White stressed American wartime duty and the farmer role in success or failure.
Washington reports the Red Cross war fund for national needs is estimated at 140 million dollars, with stockholders' 20 million in special dividends likely redirected. The plan emphasizes maximum publicity and public confidence while directing funds to soldiers and sailors first, allies second. Dr. Frank Billing will lead a 20 plus expert commission to Russia to assess needs there.
Ambassador Bakhmetieff told Congress that the Russian people oppose any separate peace with Germany and seek a lasting peace among democratic nations. He rejected rumors of a separate peace as unfounded and urged unity in opposing German autocracy.
The speaker warns that a triumphant German autocracy would destroy any firm peace among democratic nations and threaten Russia's freedom. The provisional government vows to reorganize and strengthen its army to act with the allies, promising to be a worthy partner in the league of honor.
More than 500000 volunteers have joined the American army and navy in under three months. Enrollment now tops 700000 to 800000, with most armed and under training. By end of summer nearly 1000000 more will come from June 5 registrants. Regular army nears 250000, with aims to reach 300000 this week. National guard about 260000, with 75000 under arms guarding against German plots. Navy bluejackets rise from under 60000 to 120000 amid actions off the Irish coast and on armed freighters under Vice Admiral Sims.
Washington reports the farm bill rewrite grants President Wilson authority to decide on a bone dry wartime policy and to place iron and steel and other goods under government control. The measure to be debated in the Senate, with bipartisan support, could pass by Saturday amid a close vote and ongoing contention over prohibition.
Helena notes the death of William Keating 60 of Missoula state auditor from apoplexy at home. Born in Edinburgh Scotland he moved to Canada with parents at 13a telegrapher and Grand Trunk railroad agent. He came to Montana in 1900 joining Black Foot Milling later elected state auditor in 1912 and again in 1916. He was an Elk and survived by wife and two children Minnie and William Jr.
The Rev J M Nelson will hold a service at St Mark's Episcopal Church on Sunday morning next July 1 at 11 o'clock.
The Red Cross drive finished a week of effort with Sweet Grass county allotted 1000 dollars and reaching 1419 by Monday evening, with more likely to raise to 1500. Donations included 200 from the chapter dance, 31 from Glasston ice cream supper, and 60 from Mrs Crest's dinner. A long donor list follows with many local individuals and businesses contributing.
Washington reports that the advance guard of the U S army is on French soil tonight. Thousands of regulars and Marines long serving on the Mexican border Haiti or Santo Domingo sail to join Allied forces on the western front under Major General Pershing. Major General Sibert appointed to command the first forces abroad.
President Wilson urges Sunday Schools to observe a patriotic day and donate to the Red Cross. He says citizens should support the nation’s war effort through arms or gifts, stressing unity and generous aid. The appeal targets officers teachers and scholars nationwide to aid the cause.
Patriot or Neighbor Sunday will be observed next Sunday at the Methodist church with services at 10 o'clock in the Sunday School and 11 o'clock sermon Save the Waste and Win the War. The collection supports the Red Cross fund and an appropriate badge will be presented to attendees.
National war registration reports indicate 9,649,938 men ages 21 to 30 enrolled for service. Alaska to Kentucky data show 6,001 Indians registered by officials or on reservations, with over 600,000 already in federal service and not required to register. Provost Marshal’s Office says the census estimate of 10,276,640 eligibles is broadly correct and few slackers are expected.
Stillwater County may call an early grand jury as 20 petitions circulate among farmers volunteering to secure names. Merle Smith of the Stillwater County Democrat reported the move during a Billings visit, citing discontent over two commissioners appointing Ralph Barr as supervisor of roads with increased authority over George N Cardozo, who lost the election for that office.
County voters backed the present county surveyor in a record runoff, prompting commissioners to face disapproval. Mr. Smith notes petitions circulating with over 1 000 signatures urging action and says grand jury sessions may be called.
The wedding of Richard Morrison and Esther Mae Birely will be held at the bride’s Billings home on Thursday night June 28. The groom, known as Dick, is a former star athlete and oil businessman with many friends in the Pikes Peak region. The bride is popular in Billings social circles and the couple will reside there after August 1.
Work for the Red Cross in Sweet Grass county grows rapidly with neighborhood entertainments sending donations to headquarters. A Big Timber dance raised 42 00 and a lawn dinner at the Crest ranch near Eight Mile bridge netted over 60 for the cause.
A freight wreck in the local yards Monday noon involved a local freight and an east bound through freight. Cars coupled and brakes failed, causing a collision that toppled a wool car and scattered lumber. A wrecker from Laurel later cleared the scene while through trains used a temporary track arrangement.
The plan by the U S department of agriculture to supply farm labor has a local setup in Sweet Grass County led by county agent D S Fox. He has named precinct assistants and urges farmers needing labor to enroll and apply early. A partial list of precinct agents is provided with a complete list to follow.
The State Red Cross committee thanks Sweet Grass county residents for immediate funds to aid Red Cross work. Special appreciation goes to Mrs. Roy Osburn, C. A. Caulkins, R. J. Grady, A. L. Phillips, Jay Loving, and Ole Ness for their time and effort. The manager notes continued public support will be needed if the war lasts longer.
At a Red Cross al fresco event on the Lanagan ranch in Springdale nearly sixty people attended. The benefit raised $100 for Red Cross work with Grace and Florence Carney and Joseph Lanagan lauded for organizing. Col. A B Coit spoke on Red Cross efficiency and relief efforts with Rev. Edwards and local performers providing entertainment.
Guests from Washington F. H. Slussar, foreman of Briggs-Ellis Co. ranches on Big Timber Creek, now a Walla Walla resident, arrived Sunday by auto with his wife and daughter. The trio will travel to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, after a stopover. Edith Slussar remains to visit Mrs. Alma Cross for several weeks.
