Messages from Oliver Hammersmark in Tokyo praise The Pioneer magazine and discuss local issues. G E Ogilvie writes from San Francisco recalling Big Timber and travels via California to Idaho and Washington, mentioning roads, weather, and a garage owner.
Over two hundred people attended Achievement Day at the Legion hall to view two years of club work from Sweet Grass and Wheatland counties. Decorations featured small flags and red white and blue streamers for Flag Day.
Mrs. Dorothy Brent of Billings Montana marks thirty years with Mountain State Telephone and Telegraph after starting as an operator in 1919. A native of Sweet Grass County and alumnus of Billings Polytechnic Institute she left in 1927 then returned two years later and has served most of her career with the company. She is mother to Shirley Miller Jessie Libke and Dorothy Miller and active in the Telephone Pioneers of America Eastern Star Women of Moose United Commercial Travelers Auxiliary and the Lockwood Women’s Club. Her hobby collection includes stamps old fans and buttons.
Montana Supreme Court declares punchboards and licensing of trade stimulators unconstitutional. The unsigned opinion calls punch boards a form of lottery, voiding laws authorizing their licensing. The ruling may cut more than 1 million dollars annually from state and local revenues, with tax receipts already down from 825 000 in 1951 to about 710 000 last year.
Col Wallis Huidekoper urges Big Timber to honor Flag Day on Saturday the 14th with bright displays and patriotic sentiment. He recalls Old Glory as a symbol of freedom and justice and notes the flag’s historic origins tied to Elizabeth Ross and General Washington.
W D McKenzie, 89, died this morning at Community hospital after a period of ill health. He had been a patient since May 10. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 from the Congregational church with Rev Jack Howlett of Billings officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View.
The Big Timber chapter FFA received a one hundred dollar award from the Montana State FFA association for leading safety first activities in 1951 52. Programs included a radio safety broadcast a safety play at the state convention and films for high school students. The award advances Big Timber into the Pacific region safety contest with the chance to reach the national FFA competition.
Montana officials signed 21.7 million dollars in bonds to finance the state veteran bonus. The issue, bid by Smith, Barney and Co. and Blythe and Co. at 2.9193 percent, matures 1953 to 1982. About 65000 veterans are eligible for monthly bonuses of 10 dollars stateside and 15 dollars overseas or flying for service from December 7, 1941 to September 2, 1945. First bonus check to be presented at Montana Veterans of Foreign Wars convention.
Bud Linderman a rodeo star from Red Lodge Montana was held on burglary charges in Carlsbad New Mexico. Deputies captured him in Midland Texas and returned him to face accusations of taking part in a Pecos Valley Construction break in where watches checks insurance papers and deeds were reported stolen. Officers linked him to the crime through footprints. He had appeared in a local rodeo the prior week.
The Town and Country club met at Mrs. Earl Green’s ranch home on Friday June 6. Eight of the thirteen members attended the first freezing foods lesson led by club leaders. Plans were made for a July picnic.
Guest of Sister Miss Eloise McLaughlan of Billings visits with brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Bernard Schmitt of Reed Point. Schulers from Havre, Howard Hemphill and three children, stay at the Schuler cabin on the Boulder. Cam erons visit. Mrs. Howard Hemphill and three children depart after a week with Edith Cameron and Don Cameron family. Mrs Buck Ward hosts a birthday party for daughter Lynn in Sweet Grass canyon with guests Patricia and Sheryl Tronrud Judy Grosfield Barbara Lape Keith Christiansen.
The American Legion votes to hold a Big Timber rodeo on August 16 and 17 and accepts Oral Zumwalt of Augusta to produce it. Several producers have been contacted and more rodeo men show interest as word spreads. Ralph Prather notes further details.
Louise McMahan 79 a Melville pioneer died after a short illness. Funeral held at Settlement church with Rev Earl Duame officiating. Burial in Settlement cemetery. She was born October 12 1873 in La Crosse Wisconsin came to Melville in 1882 and married William McMahan in 1894. She leaves five sons a daughter two brothers a sister six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Sandra Breck five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Arnold Breck died Monday at the Community hospital shortly after an operation to remove her tonsils. Exact cause not determined. Funeral at Big Timber Lutheran church with Rev Earl Duame to conduct and Sigrid Tollefson to sing. Survived by baby sister Becky Diane brother Gary 7 and grandparents Mr and Mrs Frank Mack and Mrs Sivert Breck.
Visiting at Coles Mrs Chas Steensland of Ellensburg Washington spends two weeks visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Ed Cole and relatives. From Monterey Margy and Viva Wagner with Ann Kinsey returned from Monterey California and drove Ann to Billings to visit her sister. Among out of town attendees at Mrs Louise McMahan funeral were John Dahl and his Riverside in law. Danny Murphy won Time magazine editors medal for a current events test at the high school. Books donated to Big Timber library by the Big Timber Womans club include numerous classic works and reference titles.
The Big Timber Ropin' n Ridin' Club sponsored a Sunday gymkhana drawing a sizable crowd with free entertainment. Results list top four in each event including Harold Esp Cyril Nyre Jim Fairchild Wally Waller in saddle and go and numerous children and men in potato races.
Ten Scouts from Troop 21 joined a district camporee near Indian Creek ten miles south of Mammoth in Yellowstone Park. Four troops from Livingston Gardiner Big Timber attended about 75 scouts total. Big Timber left early to attend a Pee Wee baseball game in Livingston.
The Montana Institute of the Arts hosts a three day festival at the University of Montana in Missoula June 20 21 and 22 led by local president Mrs Raymond Heem. Exhibits include paintings by Mrs Virgil Broughton and Miss Helen McAuslan with painting and ceramics workshops and a Friday program tracing the evolution of American folk dancing from Revolutionary War days to the present followed by Western square dancing. A banquet on Saturday night will close the event.
Open house at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schmitt is set for Sunday June 22 from 3 to 6 PM to honor their thirty six wedding anniversary. Mrs Mike Hammersmark with daughter Linda and Olav Stone departed Saturday for a trip to Norway. Olav plans to stay longer while Linda and Mrs Hammersmark expect to return September 1.
