Livingston attorney James F OConnor, a Montana Democrat, filed his nominating petition with Secretary of State Sam W Mitchell in Helena for the Second District congressional race. He vows farm relief, rural electrification, unemployment insurance and pension proposals, and opposition to foreign entanglements.
Roy E. Ayers of Lewistown Montana Democrat and former congressman retired from office on Wednesday and traveled by air to Helena to begin his gubernatorial campaign. The two term representative will emphasize his record in Congress and the Montana judiciary focusing on agricultural and labor legislation and public problem solving.
One hundred twenty five Royal Neighbors attended the day and evening sessions of a district convention in Bozeman. Next year's meeting will be at Emigrant. Mrs Charles Murphy of Emigrant was chosen district oracle, Mrs Grace Evans of Livingston district vice oracle, and recorder and receiver were chosen from the Emigrant camp. Mrs. Julia Field 80 widow of Eugene Field the children's poet died of a heart attack at her Heatford Junction Wisconsin home late Monday. She was stricken at the estate saved by her husband’s fraternity two weeks earlier when foreclosure threatened. Her elder son Eugene Field II was at her bedside.
Helena associate justice S V Stewart spoke at Montana State College commencement urging graduates to engage in public affairs with intelligence and faith in the U S Constitution and fundamental government principles.
Montana’s July 21 primary drew a record 124 candidates, 115 for state and national offices. The filing deadline forced rapid late entries, including W. B. Sands and S. V. Stewart for U.S. senator, T. O. Larson for U.S. senator, Miles Romney for governor, and Frank Hazelbaker in the race against Robert Pauline.
The former Boulder and Big Timber resident and Northern Pacific signal maintenance man, Ralph Wesley Davis Sr., died by a gunshot at his California home after suffering stomach trouble. His son Ralph Wesley Davis Jr. identified the body near Clara street and Ja boneria road in Cudahy while a sheriff investigated. A note mentioning Snyder's gun was found in Davis's pocket.
The Billings Gazette reports a one day meeting in Billings to organize state wide efforts against grasshoppers Mormon crickets and other pests decimating Montana croplands. Federal and state officials sparred over control measures as Gov Elmer Holt seeks a coordinated program with local farmers and a Helena presiding state veterinarian Dr W J Butler urging federal leadership.
The Roberts wool pool sold at thirty cents a pound, announced by Roberts State Bank. The Carbon County Wool Growers association arranged the deal with Dewey Gold and Company of Boston, purchasing 17 000 fleeces. The consignment will be loaded after shearing ends.
Washington reports that 1932 bonus march veterans will have their return train fare deducted from the monthly bonus payments. The Veterans Administration says government paid transportation costs for the return trip will be subtracted, per a Congress order in July 1932. About 5,100 veterans face an average deduction of $15.
Col H Norman Schwarzkopf prepares to end a five year term as superintendent amid governor Hoffmans criticism of policing in the Lindbergh case. Lindbergh praised Schwarzkopf, while Col Mark Kimberling awaits senate confirmation to succeed him after reappointment rejection.
President Roosevelt nominates Chester C. Davis to the Federal Reserve Board and H R Tolley is named to succeed Davis as AAA administrator. Tolley will take the permanent title when Davis is confirmed by the Senate.
John Hays Hammond Sr. 81, a Californian who rose from a shoestring start to become a mining expert and multi millionaire, died of a heart attack at Lookout Hill estate in Gloucester. His secretary found him in his study reading, after a year of ill health he had just arrived from Washington and planned to open his estate for summer.
R. G. Linebarger of Havre filed a petition in Helena for the Republican nomination for secretary of state. He is editor and publisher of the Havre Independent, previously ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor, and has worked in Montana newspapers for about 25 to 30 years since moving from Billings to Butter.
Edward C Day, 73, former Livingston attorney and past exalted ruler of the local Elks lodge, died in a San Diego hospital. Born March 20 1861 in Cynthiana Kentucky he studied at Washington and Lee and practiced law in Cincinnati and St Paul before moving to Livingston and later Helena.
In Cleveland on June 8 10 000 plus attended as Herbert Hoover called for a holy crusade for liberty prompting a lively convention start. Delegates rallied against the Roosevelt administration as Republican leaders debated platform language amid Borah Steiner and Borah conflicts. The meeting featured a broad push for harmony with anti Landon factions debating currency and labor amendment questions.
Funeral service for Hildred Florence Kerin wife of Mike Kerin and daughter of Senator and Mrs F M Lamp was held at the Lutheran church with Rev C E Tate officiating. Interment followed at Mountain View cemetery. She died of puerperal sepsis at the state hospital Monday morning. She was nearly 29, born September 14 1907, a Helena High School graduate who married Mike Kerin six years ago. She leaves a husband, parents, a daughter Mary Josephine aged four and a brother Paul Lamp.
Hollywood. June 8. Jobyna Howland veteran motion picture comedienne died today. Dr. P. G. White said she likely suffered a heart attack. The actress was found on the kitchen floor by her French maid in her home.
Coroner's jury rules Herman Pelto of Roberts died after grabbing two heavily charged high tension wires east of Billings while clearing space for a house being moved from Klein to property. Pelto, 25, married with a six month old, worked for Stuart M. Thornton of Laurel transporting small four room houses from Musselshell to the area.
At Convention Hall on June 9 the Republican gathering began with little party strife as committees were formed to tackle platform questions. Chairman Henry Fletcher led a brief session while many delegates and ticket holders were absent. John M. Hamilton appeared prominently, signaling that political maneuvering would continue behind closed doors.
Herman Langworthy of Kansas City, a Landon choice, was quickly elected without opposition as chairman of the Republican resolutions committee. The committee opened a public hearing on the platform while Langdon supporters met privately to quell disputes that could spark a floor fight at the convention.
Laura Binsfelt daughter of Mrs. Lester Stewart of Bozeman and Robert Clark son of Sheriff L W Clark of Harlowton were married Wednesday at 4 pm in the Churchill home. Rev. C E Tate officiated. They will live in Big Timber for the summer.
Washington mourns Speaker Joseph W. Byrns with a state funeral in the House chamber. President Roosevelt leads in a national delegation as 60 members travel to Nashville for services. Byrns’ successor William Bankhead heads the accompanying party and Chaplain Barrow Phillips presides.
