A public meeting at the Fire Hall next Monday at 8 p.m. will review a low cost lagoon method for sewage treatment. The group promotes natural digestion in 10 acre per 1000 population lagoons with 3 to 5 feet depth and no runoff.
Painful memory follows work project at Natural Bridge as Mac Clark recalls the effort by the Lions club. His right thumb was mashed by a chain last Sunday near Boulder but he continues work amid reports and street patching delays blamed on prolonged wet weather.
The County Federation of Women’s clubs met Tuesday in the library. President Mrs. Bealy led the business session and the club donated $25 to the library. Afternoon program featured Marion Beley piano, a vocal solo, and Mrs. Svend May-Yand’s song with Mrs. Frank Chase on piano. Mrs. Sophia Guthrie shared experiences from 22 states and the District of Columbia.
A community event coordinated by Archier Allen of Livingston featured a Shorthorn picnic with Wyoming beef barbecue donated and prepared by local volunteers. Orlyn Oswald association president led the meeting while Montana State College livestock specialist Jacobson reported on chemical additives in feeds.
Park county commissioners voted unanimously to reject Sheriff Fred White Jr. and allow him to remain in office after a week of controversy sparked by a telephone argument with Attorney General Forrest H. Anderson over a nearby brothel. About 1,500 residents signed petitions urging the board to keep him on, and White provided a prepared account of the call. the decision was announced Tuesday evening.
Herbert R. Bert Kinne 77 longtime dairy operator and livestock dealer in Park County died in Livingston after months of illness. Born February 23 1880 in Coventry Vermont he moved to southern Montana in 1905 and ran a milk route and dairy ranch in Grannis area. Survivors include daughter Gladys Marsh Las Vegas Nevada son Roy Livingston grandson Terry Kinne brothers Henry Lowell and a sister Bertha Dupont of Orleans Vermont. Funeral held Monday afternoon.
Vacation church school at Congregational church ends this week and starts a two week session next Monday morning. Mrs Walt Huffman directs with teachers including Audrey Lillibridge Wanda Deimas George Deimas, Sheila Lillibridge, Jerry Scheelgwilleh, and others guiding grades 3 4 5 6 7. Recreation, music, art and handcrafts set by listed staff with Donna Vaughn as secretary treasurer.
Don Smart told the Lions Tuesday noon that Highway 119 between Roy and Phillips is under construction with completion next year. The route from Big Timber to Malta would link with Canadian Highway 4, boosting north south traffic and tourism as work continues. A bridge pier is built with drainage solved and more meetings planned to form a development organization for the route.
Gary Smart delivered a bases loaded homer in the seventh to spark a 10-8 PeeWee win over the Livingston Tigers to start the season. Hauge Klindt and McCauley opened the rally with hits, Mehus drove in tying runs, and Klindt and Hauge added key late hits as Smart starred behind the plate in a perfect night at the plate for Klindt with three hits and two walks.
The 71.5 year old William G Mead suffered a fractured jaw after a Memorial Day morning crash 41 percent miles west of Big Timber. His wife, driving, lost control when a flat tire caused the car to veer and cross a fence. A small boy in the vehicle was uninjured. Mead received treatment at Community hospital and then St. Vincent’s in Billings. Patrolman Paul Deverle noted no evidence of recklessness.
The Montana Fish and Game Department reminds fishermen opening day May 26 to study the rules and regulations. Crossing private lands for access requires permission and care, life jackets are required for all boaters, and angling rules change yearly. Maps of rules are available from licensed agents statewide.
The parade on June 23 at 11:00 a.m. includes the Black Horse patrol of the Billings Shrine, Billings Legion drum and bugle corps, Auxiliary drill team, Billings Junior Moose drum corps, and city and high school bands. Floats judged by prizes totaling 750 dollars. 4H clubs form a separate group.
Local ranchers numbering 105 met at the courthouse Monday evening to form an organization aimed at securing federal aid against grasshoppers. Trustees of county school districts were named to help gather information for submission to state and federal agencies, with County Agent F B Peterson directing. Federal hopper control director Ivar Twitle described federal interest, while George Roemhild spoke for the state entomology department.
Ray Dodds leaves Sunday to Cooke City where he will be employed this summer. He is set to join local operations and begin a seasonal posting guiding visitors and supporting local services.
Sweet Grass County crop and grassland conditions are the best in 15 years per County Agent F. B. Peterson. About 10 percent of spring wheat remains unsown and 25 percent of oats and barley. Rain slowed spring work but benefited dry soil, with 11.18 inches since Dec 1 at Big Timber totals and May rainfall at 5.95 inches. Areas east of Melville and near Reed Point show varied rainfall. McLeod, Melville, and Gibson districts received more rain. Warm days boosted grass growth, though winds, dry spells, hail, and cricket swarms threaten crops and pastures this summer.
Albert Wagner known as Al with his briar pipe ends thirty years of service in Big Timber street department retiring July 1. He started as extra help fixing leaks then became full time under Mayor Dr O Leary. He helped blacktop side streets and drove the grader for about ten years on an old machine. He was valued for steady hard work and quiet efficiency.
Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Elgas returned Tuesday night from a three month vacation visiting a son and daughter who were former Big Timber residents. They traveled from home to New York to stay with daughter and family, then to Kenosha Wisconsin to visit Mrs. Elgas' brother, Frant V. Merritt. In Los Angeles they visited their son Bil Land and family, and in Sacramento dined with Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Bell. A scenic highlight was a tour of the tee peninsula with Sgt. and Mrs. K. E. Wright who plan to move to Lacey Washington. They then headed home from Seattle.
The District 1 board voted Wednesday evening to accept consolidation with District 7 if voters in District 7 approve the merger. Chairman Schneider said the law requires the accepting district to hold the first vote, showing willingness before the other group decides.
Coach Jim Schneider announced the Livingston Pirates PeeWee team will play this season with no admission fee. The hat will be passed to cover travel and equipment costs. Local boys may play at home. 14 will be chosen for away trips, 10 wearing new suits purchased by the Legion post. Fans are urged to support the team.
Vacation Bible School at the EUB church ends Friday with a full day program and Sunday morning worship followed by an all church picnic. Teachers include Mrs. Wilbur Williams Mrs. George Lamach for preschool and primary classes with Mrs. Sid Huyser leading juniors and Mrs. Herb Walton guiding intermediates.
Rev J D Lindley starts his fifth year at the Big Timber church following re-appointment. The new parsonage on Fifth and Bramble was dedicated with Bishop Ira D Warner and Conference Superintendent Lewis E Magsig officiating. Special guests included Mrs Magsig and former pastors from Reed Point Billings and Missoula.
Softball commissioner De Cameron announced registrations for players under 15 and boys over 15, due by June 26 at Solberg’s Klindt’s and Legion of Moose. League play starts July 8 with practices now. a $1 fee funds new managers Walt Dutton Firemen, Bob Bowers Jaycees, Carl Mosness Moose, Lloyd Severance Legion, Palmer Finsvik Lions.
The Church of God Vacation Bible School ends tomorrow with a noon picnic. The school runs 9 a m to noon all week led by Miss Elnore Huyser with Mrs. Alice Myrstol guiding grades 1 and 2 and Mrs. Paul Seagraves guiding grades 4 5 and 6. Closing exercises are Sunday morning with a short program and handicraft display.
