Smallpox Link to 6000 Dead Indians From Old Trapper Coat

The 1837 St Louis to Fort Union voyage of Capt. Barnard Pratt aboard the Trapper is blamed for a smallpox outbreak after Old Bill May left a ragged coat. The disease spread to Assinniboine and Blood tribes, devastating the Mandans and Minnetarees, with thousands killed or displaced. Trade later rebounded at Fort Union as robes and furs moved east despite the epidemic.
