In eastern Montana in 1891 prairie fires threatened cattle outfits in the Tongue river valley near Miles City. Sparks from passing locomotives prompted Northern Pacific to contract plowing six furrows along the rail right of way to create a fire guard, with inspections by stockgrowers officials and input from local ranchers.

Food That It Saves Will Pay For an Electric Refrigerator
An electric refrigerator on the farm is a year round necessity, especially in heat, delivering health and economic benefits. It minimizes bacteria, prevents spoilage, and saves food, paying for itself many times over. It runs quietly in a safe 35 to 50 degree zone and costs about 3 to 6 cents daily at five cents per kWh.
