Sponsors Paul Van Cleve and the Ropin n Ridin club anticipate a record turnout as clear weather is forecast. The day opens with a 1 pm cutting horse contest with a 100 purse and 20 entry fee. Six open races follow, each 100 purse plus fees, plus a $1.50 adult and 0.50 child admission. A pari mutuel betting booth and calf roping entertainment are planned between races.
Leonard Esp of Wilkins & Co reports Sweet Grass County produced about 483 442 pounds of wool in the past year. Local pool accounted for 312 088 pounds, independent wool 171 354 pounds, with 38 781 consigned to the National Wool Marketing Association and 417 461 to Wilkins & Co. Remaining 27 000 pounds sit unsold. The total wool including off sorts nears 500 900 pounds.
Raymond Hoem and Kenneth Elgen excel in an outdoor small bore shoot at Great Falls last Sunday amid gusty wind. Clarence Boyle of Laurel won, with Elgen and Hoem securing multiple sharpshooter and aggregate honors as 33 competitors chased top scores. Several locals planned to travel to Spokane for the regional on August 2–3.
Miss Evelyn Lovseth wed Donald Imlay at a Sunday ceremony in Grey Cliff with Rev. E E Tollefson officiating. The couple left for a Yellowstone Park honeymoon after a reception. she is a 1952 graduate and he works on the Bill Lay ranch.
Camp Mimanagish wraps sessions with 246 registered participants. About 40 from Big Timber attended the church service. Sunny Snyder of Missoula was elected state president of the Pilgrim Fellowship. Marilyn Miller served on the camp council. Dr Siebart of Livingston was elected camp director for next year.
A 16 year old Billings youth is in police custody amid investigations into killing deer and antelope out of season and selling carcasses. Police report night shooting with a .300 magnum and a small arsenal seized. Seven others pleaded guilty in Yellowstone County’s worst game violation case with fines totaling 1900 dollars and up to 21 months in jail.
Montana World War II bonus director J. F. Neely said all claims will be paid by Christmas. More than 53 000 claims have been received with totals expected over 60 000. The state has 22 million for bonuses to veterans from Dec 7 1941 to Sept 2 1945, with 300000 set aside for administration.
The body of Alvin L. Whitmore of Miles City was found among wrecked Northern Pacific freight cars west of Helena near Livingston. A social security card helped ID the decedent as a section hand who died after a freight derailment that spilled a car and damaged poles. fingerprints were sent to Washington for confirmation.
Funeral services for Mrs Catherine Lyon who died Tuesday in Spokane will be held Friday at 10 a m from St Josephs Catholic church. She would have turned 83 on Aug 15. A rosary will be said at Lowry funeral home Thursday at 7 30 p m. Mrs Lyon had been in poor health for years and died at a Spokane nursing home where she had been cared for the last three months. All the children are present for the services Mary Severance of Bozeman Raymond of Spokane Robert She and Lately of Gooding Ida and Walter of Salt Lake City.
Governor Adlai E. Stevenson accepted the Democratic presidential nomination in Chicago vowing to fight to win in November and to make the twentieth century the golden age of man. He urged Democrats to rally behind his program and pledged to give all he has with courage, morality, and wisdom in the campaign to capture the White House.
Sen. John J. Sparkman of Alabama was nominated for vice president by acclamation and accepted with a pledge to keep the party great and make it greater. He emphasized loyalty to the party and its goals as the convention closed.
Overnight guest Joy aeeP of Medford Oregon stayed with Dorothy Ann McArthur on Tuesday as she visited friends and relatives with her parents.
Five special acts have been contracted for the American Legion rodeo in Big Timber on August 16 and 17. Ticket sales begin August 6 at the Legion hall with prices 1.50 for adults and 0.50 for children. box seats 3.00, grandstand 2.25, bleachers 1.50. The Johnson Sound and Equipment Co. will supply sound and the city band will provide music.
Pierson reports his son Jimmy trapped a bobcat alive at the Henry F. McFarlin ranch east of Shepherd. The animal, mistaken for a full cat, was netted and will be turned over to the Laurel zoo. Earlier, Henry McFarlin’s 9 year old killed a smaller bobcat on June 22. A separate 40 pound bobcat was shot near Hesper by four youths on July 16.
Alfred Rudd Sr., 75, longtime Big Timber resident and pioneer of the 1880s, died at Deaconess Hospital after a recent stroke and long gland ailment. He had been hospitalized a week. Funeral arrangements were not yet announced pending word from a daughter.
Myrtle Cummings Baker 46 died at Deaconess hospital Great Falls from a heart condition after entering hospital last Monday. Funeral at Big Timber Evangelical United Brethren church Thursday at 2 pm, Rev. Roukema officiating. Burial in Mountain View. Survivors include husband Walter H. Baker son Eugene in Navy sisters Nellie Murray Mable Steere Edna Clark Esther Olin Hazel Mack brothers Robert E. Cummings Philip W. Cummings.
Orvin Fjare of Big Timber was named national chairman of the Americanism committee for the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. The appointment was made by Horace E. Henderson, national president. Fjare is the immediate past president of Montana JayCees and has delivered talks on Americanism while visiting clubs across the state. He has traveled more than 25,000 miles presenting public addresses.
State historian K Ross Toole says Montana must acquire the Malcolm S Mackay Russell collection before the state can accept the Huidekoper and Stockgrowers gifts of Russell art. The Mackay collection is valued around 300000 with 15 oils seven bronzes and many sketches. A $50000 fundraising goal is under way with about 17000 still needed.
