The SGCHS budgets for 1977-78 are approved with amounts and reserves discussed at a public hearing.
The City Council met in a special budget session to set a 65 mill limit with a July 25 deadline and used reserves from the general fund library park and streets to balance the budget. A public hearing is planned for August 3 and the total taxes to be raised are $96,423.�
The Chamber of Commerce adopted annual dues of 25 dollars per business and 25 dollars for individual members, each with one vote, at the last Thursday noon meeting at Frye’s. Mace Clark was named membership chairman by President Chuck Heckart. He and his committee will contact potential members in the community.
Dues decided and an outline for committees given as the Sweet Grass County Chamber of Commerce plans form. The exact number and type of committees will be chosen at the next regular meeting on Aug. 18. Citizens and businesses urged to contact Mac Clark or Chuck Heckart to join.
Parade chairman Don Blair invites early float planning with prizes in 4 H Commercial Fraternal oldest youngest cowboy and cowgirl most unusual and bicycle categories. Billings American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps and Deer Lodge Drill Team will participate. Donations welcome to Parade Fund at Citizens Bank or Box 359 By Timber.
Chief Dennis Beer notes a string of right of way fires last Friday caused by exhaust carbon. Fires struck Mallard Springs subdivision, Thompson entrance, Dale Oberly property, behind Connor's cement works, and west of town. volunteers and five trucks contained the damage. On Sunday a timber and brush blaze on an island east of the Carl Kjarmo ranch was also noted as caused by an untended campfire and promptly mopped up to prevent spread.
The 1977 Big Timber Rodeo tickets go on sale August 1 at 8 am in the former Dr. Wistey office on McLeod Street. General admission is 3 dollars, box seats 4.50 to 5 dollars, and reserved seats 4 dollars. Entries for local residents must be in by 4 pm August 4, with reservations held if tickets are not yet ready.
The Overland Golf Course will open for limited play on Saturday July 30 with gates about 8 a.m. Winter rules apply. Raffle drawings at 4 p.m. Sunday at the course. Members have sold tickets for weeks. Complimentary refreshments donated by Modern Auto Body and Transfer served 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Congressman Ken Marlenee announced that the House Interior subcommittee will decide on S 393, the Wilderness Bill, on August 4. He noted hearings in Lewistown on the Middle Fork of the Judith River, the Big Snowies and seven other Montana wilderness areas as part of study for possible designation.
Forest Supervisor Gene Hawkes announced a revised schedule for the second National Roadless Area Review and Evaluation workshop. The Bozeman event now occurs August 9 at 7 00 p m in the MSU Student Union Ballroom, one day earlier than the original August 10 date. Hawkes noted overlap with hearings on Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness bill SB 1671 in Billings.
A rash of lawn sprinkler thefts was reported to the sheriff's office this week. One hundred dollars of hoses and sprinklers disappeared from Big Timber Grade School and more equipment was taken from City Park over the weekend. Three local residents reported missing yard waterers Monday night. Residents urged to bring sprinklers and hoses indoors at night.
The Pioneer raises prices on subscriptions and single copies starting August 17. Local year subscriptions rise to 8.50, out of county to 9.25, and out of state to 10.50 while single copies cost 0.20 each.
Gus Stroh of Montana Power said an old transformer behind the Col or Shop burned out first at about 9 45 p m causing four area transformers to overload and fail. The outage affected Gusts to the Library for about five hours with power restored by 2 50 a m. Cable TV service was interrupted city wide.
