Independence Day was celebrated by nearly all towns in and near Sweet Grass County with Big Timber absent from festivities. The day saw citizens visiting sister towns, ideal weather, and no fatalities, reflecting a progressive communal spirit.
Melville marked Independence Day with a daylong program that drew about a thousand locals. The Big Timber Independent band led a celebration that included a noon meal by Melville’s young ladies, a Declaration read by Miss Colvin, and an oration by J T Vaughan on current affairs and the flag. Evening races at the track, broncho busting, fireworks, and a grand ball at the Melville Trading Company hall capped the festivities, with music by Wood's orchestra and a dawn departure as residents headed home after a grand show.
A basket picnic was held in the grove at The Settlement by older residents. The gathering was quiet and enjoyable. In the evening the young people shared a social dance in the school house.
Absarokee celebrated with reading of the Declaration of Independence by Marta Kelly and a Shull oration in Columbus. A noon basket picnic and afternoon sports led to a patriotic concert and fireworks finale. The Big Timber cornet band arrived at 6 pm due to late train, then crossed flood-impacted rivers to return home Friday.
The first Greycliff celebration drew attendees from near and far. A noon basket dinner in the grove preceded sports and races, followed by an evening fireworks display and a grand ball in the new hall that lasted until morning. Organizers express satisfaction with the inaugural event.
In McLeod residents held a basket picnic followed by fireworks in the afternoon and a well attended dance at Kasey's hall in the evening. The event was praised by attendees as a splendid time.
Notice to taxpayers announces the 1907 assessment rolls in the county clerk’s office for inspection. The Board of County Commissioners will meet as a Board of Equalization on Monday July 15 1907 at 10 o clock a m. H C Aten County Clerk dated July 9 1907.
Rev Erickson invites children to join the chorus in session time at the city parochial school. Forty five already joined, a chorus of one hundred voices is the goal. Practices are Wednesdays and Fridays at 3 PM with no charges.
Arthur C Thompson Peter Becker and William Webb survived a bridge collapse on the Yellowstone while hauling wool for John Martin. The wrecked wagon and two horses stranded on a sandbar as rescuers, aided by a large crowd, pulled the men from the river.
One million pounds of wool has already arrived at the local wool house amid rain and flooding. Prices have ranged from 20 to 22 cents per pound with some clips at 23 cents. Buyers include Thos Ryley for J Koshland Co and others in Boston. Bridge washouts at Columbus and Springdale hinder shipments, forcing deliveries to Billings and Lewistown due to the Yellowstone River crossing failure.
An examination will be held in the office of the Forest Supervisor in Livingston on July 23 and 24 for assistant forest ranger positions at 9000 per year. Posts are permanent with promotion potential. Tests cover mountain endurance and land surveying basics. only able bodied, physically strong men should apply to the Civil Service Commission in Washington, D.C.
St Marks Episcopal Church schedules morning prayer and sermon at 11:00 a.m. and evening prayer and sermon at 7:30 p.m. The evening time is altered this week due to the rector's vacation with friends in Sheridan Wyoming. He plans to return and resume services on Sunday August 18. No services will be held after this Sunday until then.
Judge Henry issues a temporary restraining order upon affidavit by J. B. McCormick of Hunters Springs. McCormick says the defendant runs a permanent sheep camp on Dog Creek contaminating domestic water at the Springs. Sheriff McCue served the papers, with a hearing set for the 8th in this city.
Bray the Butcher advertises Kum C Me selling home made bacon and ham. Bray is identified as the local butcher promoting his meat products to customers.
A seven room residence on three enclosed lots with a good well and shed one block from Dier Browning store is offered. For more details inquire at this office. Also a rare jewelry assortment from an East retiree is offered at cut prices, plus several desirable city residences listed by Skillman Bailey.
John Stone of Greycliff lists two branded mares missing from the N J Tintinger ranch on Big Timber Creek since March including a brown mare with white facial stripe and a white left hind foot and a bay mare three years old with white forehead stripe. Chester White pigs priced at 85.00 each offered by Allen Dopce Big Timber. Also classified note: Primter job inquiry from O E Lewis Yerington Nev and repair work referrals to L G Wood jeweler.
