The Melville hockey reporter disclosed that Barrow is Armand Baril of McIntyre Motor. Teammates say Armand truly knows hockey. Local practice space remains scarce as snow hinders Lavold lake use and Van Cleve rink is only convenient on Sundays.
Ben Miles of McLeod writes in support of our view on the fish and game commission but blasts other points. He calls for fair critique, notes Montana’s game laws are political, and questions wardens’ knowledge while urging examination of the wildlife situation from bottom up.
The Big Timber Lions club will again sponsor a grade school basketball tournament with dates to be set. Proceeds support youth activities. The club also reports a plan to install a rifle range in the gym basement run by the Rifle and Pistol club, supervised and available to youth with no interference to other activities. Carl Idland named man of the year at JayCees banquet.
Quinn Meteir and Olga Stenberg married at the Lutheran church with Rev. B E Tollefson presiding. The bride wore a teal blue dress and brown accessories with white gardenia corsage. the groom wore formal attire. A reception at the bride’s home followed, with many local relatives in attendance and a brief wedding trip reported as a future plan.
At Moose range the 17 member Rifle and Pistol Club posted scores with Ken Boe leading Oscar Fallang Jr. by nine points after the second shoot. The club bought a Winchester model 70 .270 to raffle for funds toward a new indoor range. drawing is May 14 at the 200 yard shoot.
Big Timber rifle club defeated Livingston American Legion shooters in a away match at Livingston. Nine Big Timber marksmen posted a 2261 aggregate to Livingston's 2211 with Walt Martinz scoring 276 and Ken Elgen 272 leading the field. A return match is planned for early February in Big Timber.
From Miles City A. W. Strickland, who has been employed in Miles City, came home Monday and will stay for some time. He says it is somewhat warmer here than in the eastern part of the state. Return from Trip Rudolph and Peter Burmeister, Teddy Zindler and Alvin Gorr re turned Friday from a sightseeing trip through Utah, Nevada, California and Colorado. They had been gone since Jan. 2.
In a close March of Dimes charity contest the American Legion beat the Columbus Independents 60 to 55. Bob Deegan led scoring with 20 points, lifting the Legion from a halftime deficit to secure the win.
FBI joined a manhunt for a bandit gang that stole 1.5 million dollars from Brink's Ince. A $100,000 reward was offered for capture. The seven masked gunmen slipped away after bypassing six locked doors leaving another million in cash behind.
In Normal, Illinois, Mrs. Harold Paulson and other women are showcased in a Spring-Summer McCall Needlework magazine feature titled Show Us How You Did It With Snapshots. The caption identifies Harold Paulson with a broad grin, crediting his wife for knitting the Argyle tie using a McCall pattern.
Mr. Paulson who taught at Sweet Grass high school in 1946 47 is now in his third year teaching at Illinois State Normal University Normal Illinois.
George Moffatt, 85, died Wednesday morning at his daughter Mrs. J O Matthew's home. A resident here since August 1946, his remains will be taken to Pierce for burial with Mrs. Matthew accompanying the body.
Mrs. Howard Hendrickson of Pendleton Oregon writes that Big Timber is growing and progressive and she enjoys reading the hometown paper. The notice also lists out of town games with Melville Longhorns visiting Great Falls Juniors and Big Timber skaters traveling to Roundup for a Sunday matchup.
Carl Idland son of Mr and Mrs Bert Idland of Grey Cliff was chosen man of the year at the Jaylees achievement banquet at the Moose club last Saturday. The Lions club secret committee announced the award with JayCee president Howard Forsythe Jr as master of ceremonies. Idland active in Future Farmers of America since freshman year at Sweet Grass County High School and has led FFA chapters district and state efforts while managing the Idland ranch during his father illness. He and Jim Bee organize Rural Youth for Farm Bureau. He received an engraved silver belt buckle and honorary JayCee membership.
Funeral services for 62 year old Nora McDonald of Reed Point were scheduled for Wednesday at the Columbus funeral chapel. The Rev. Andrew Roukema would officiate with burial in Mountainview cemetery. She died Sunday in a Billings hospital after a three year illness and a seven week stay. Born February 12 1887 in Douglas Wyoming she was the daughter of General and Mrs Johnson and married Newton R. McDonald in 1909. The couple homesteaded near Reed Point after moving from Douglas. Survivors include the widower.
The American Legion defeated the Red Lodge Eagles 67 to 50 on Sunday night. Al Deegan led the locals with 15 points, with Bob Deegan 13 and Gordon Boyd 12. Bietel 19 and Bill Ray 16 paced the visitors as the Legionnaires pulled away after a 12-12 first quarter.
Fifteen elk from Yellowstone National Park were released Friday along Sixteen Mile Creek in northern Gallatin County. The state fish and game department plans the first of 100 head from the northern park herd to be transplanted in Montana to reduce park overpopulation. The park herd totals about 11,000, prompting ranger culls of 500 and anticipated hunting removals as elk migrate southward.
The Big Timber Herders beat the Harlowton Engineers 43-38 at home, led by Elmer Johnson with 10 points, then lost 49-38 to Hardin with Peek scoring 13. The B squad split preliminaries as Harlo led early but Big Timber surged to win 46-38.
