The March of Dimes campaign kicks off January 16 and runs through January 30 with coin cards and school drives. Orvin Flare chairs the effort and funds stay local, with 50 percent retained in the community and the rest supporting the national polio fight. Melville Longhorns grab their first win of the season by defeating Big Timber 10 to 1 at the Melville rink. Big Timber pressed early, but Melville controlled the pace with four second period goals and five more in the third as standout Big Timber forward Barrow posed a constant threat. Howard Forsythe centered play while Arne Petaja anchored defense and Melville executives praised the visitors despite their exhausting effort. The crowd looked for a rematch and Melville prepared for Great Falls juniors next.

500 Elk May Not Be Limit of Park Kill
Oscar L. Chapman notes that five hundred elk may not cap Yellowstone Park slaughter. A Dec. 30 letter to George H. Kern says after 500 animals are removed the park service will reassess the hunt area north of Yellowstone and may further limit kills inside the park if needed.
