The American Legion beat the Crow Indians 55 to 39 on Saturday as Herb McCauley led with 22 points and Bill Ellison added 17. The Indians faltered in the final period, scoring only six while the Legionnaires poured in 22 to seal the lead.
After lengthy discussion the JayCees voted to affiliate with the national organization at a Big Timber cafe meeting. The move aims to secure a charter soon and boost local membership while plans for a no-cost high school football banquet were approved with details to be announced.
The JayCees announce holidays for 1948 with a list of observed dates including Washington’s birthday Memorial Day Fourth of July Labor Day Armistice Day Thanksgiving Christmas and closing by various merchants. Notices state closures will be published prior to each holiday.
Two quarter-horse mares from John Madill's Swamp Creek ranch head to California for training at Santa Anita Park near Los Angeles. Milo Westervelt, Burton Robinson and Kenneth Riveland accompany them and expect to shape them for racing in about 90 days. Madill has been offered 5000 dollars for one mare but delays selling until performance is known. The men plan to return with an outstanding stallion for the ranch after completing training.
Riverview camp No. 4413 R. N. A. installed officers after a regular meeting with a candlelight ceremony. Installing officer Past Oracle Pearse Bishop and marshals Grace Ellison Alma Cort led the proceedings. Corsages were given, Sylling received a gift for 11 years of service, and an auditor’s report was presented. Initiation set for January 21 with prizes planned for full attendance.
Lee Simonsen 78, co owner of the Northern hotel in Billings and formerly with his father at Briggs and Ellis ranch, died Wednesday in Phoenix Arizona. Funeral services are set for Monday at 2 p m in Billings.
Mrs D L White and Mrs Bert Gardner will host the 8 and J Joseph's Altar Society gathering this afternoon in the church basement.
The Big Timber Lutheran church held its annual meeting electing officers and expanding the board. Re-elected were Ray Beck president and others. Peter Riveland joined the deacons, plus four deaconesses named. Committees listed and a church night monthly approved. Billings circuit date moved. aid volunteers to serve first event. Reports show strong finances and a healthy year.
Forty residents of Sweet Grass county died in 1947 according to statistics by Mrs. Addie D. Lowry. Of the dead 28 were male and 12 female. 32 died in county, eight in Park or Yellowstone. Eight bodies were shipped in for burial and eight shipped out. two cremations and two cremated remains returned for interment. Heart disease was listed as the leading cause, followed by cancer. Four delayed births were reported and 35 babies were born locally, 18 girls and 17 boys, with additional births in Park Gallatin and Yellowstone county hospitals.
The Congregational church elected Perez N Bennett as minister and elected officers across clerical, treasurer, organist, superintendent, and secretary roles. Deacons and trustees were named, with committees set for Evangelism Education Finance Personnel. The year budget rose about 25 percent, including a larger minister’s salary. State Superintendent and Mrs C H Conner attended.
Vernon I. Meigs longtime Park county resident dies from an accidental shotgun discharge in the basement of his Livingston home. Coroner Franzen and Sheriff Olson reported the weapon discharged while cleaning hunting gear, death immediate. Survived by widow Gwendolyn, a sister in Osseo Wisconsin, another in Minneapolis, a brother in Roseburg Oregon, and several nieces and cousins.
A Monday evening meeting in Livingston drew many parents as Paul Stokes outlined Boy Scout duties and qualifications. He described the scoutmaster as a trainer of boy leaders and highlighted the troop committee role, merit badge counselors, and the assistant scoutmaster. The Lions club sponsors the Boy Scout program and the Lutheran Brotherhood runs Cub Scouts in Big Timber. The final adults meeting is set for next Monday at 7 30 at the grade school with Yellowstone council officials expected.
