Donald C. Ketcham of the Bureau of Reclamation told Livingston Rotarians that 1949 will see the start of a Mission dam survey 16 miles east of Livingston on the Yellowstone River. If funds are provided, construction could begin in 1950, providing stream stabilization storage for irrigation and about 30 000 kilowatts of power. Preconstruction work will start highway No 10 relocation surveys and outline dam details and costs.
The American Legion basketball team dropped 33 40 to Midway Chips in Lewistown Friday and 31 63 to Roundup Legionnaires the next night. They won at home 54 29 against Clyde Park with Herb McCauley scoring 20 points on 10 field goals. Al Deegan led Midway with 15 points. McCauley added 15 in the Clyde Park win.
President Truman urged a flat 40 dollar income tax cut for all taxpayers and dependents while proposing higher corporate taxes to offset a 3.2 billion revenue loss. He pressed Congress for a decade of programs to curb poverty, expand health and social security, defend housing, and admit Alaska and Hawaii as states.
Mrs Ida Pound Busha reaches her 90th birthday with family in Big Timber. Born January 8 1858 she crossed to Montana in 1880 on the Steamer Far West and helped settle the Big Elk and Two Dot country. She taught school, raised ten children, and remains active at the Busha ranch and with Sweet Grass Chapter O E S.
Weather Observer E H Ellingson reports 1947 snow totaled 55.5 inches versus a five year average of 47.97 inches, while precipitation reached 13.95 inches against a 14.95 inch five year average. Yearly figures from 1943 to 1947 list varying snowfall and precipitation. The week ended January 7 saw a high of 58 and a low of 24 with 0.03 precip.
A daughter named Linda Kay Baril weighing eight pounds six ounces was born Saturday to Mr and Mrs Armond Baril at St Vincent's Hospital in Billings. Mr Baril works as a bookkeeper at McIntyre Motor Sales.
Paul Stokes of Livingston led an adults meeting at the grade school to explain the Boy Scout program ahead of a new Big Timber charter. He outlined the aims, five program points, leadership roles, and how Scouts build character and citizenship through individual growth and practical activities.
Mrs Emogene Ernst formerly of Elk Creek died unexpectedly on New Year’s Eve after an operation in Boston two weeks earlier. Born October 9, 1873 in Cazenovia New York, she married O H Ernst in 1898. Surviving are her husband a son and a daughter two grandchildren and two sisters. Cremation followed funeral services in West Roxbury.
A ceremony at Redeemer Lutheran church parsonage Livingston united Eileen Hochstrasser of Mammoth Yellowstone Park with George Clayton of Big Timber in a simple single ring wedding. Attendants included Gerald Clayton and Mrs Clayton. The couple will reside in Gardiner after a brief honeymoon.
Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Valgamore and Lois spent New Year’s at Harlowton with his sister Mrs. E. Jv. Riggs and family, sharing holiday moments with relatives in Montana.
Three members of Sweet Grass post No. 19 of the American Legion at Big Timber were chosen for state committees for the coming year. State adjutant Herb Kibler announced the appointments made by Montana department commander Glenn L. Denton. Appointees are Ted C. Busha, safety. Dick Armstrong, graves registration. and Dr. Ben Olness, Boy Scouts.
